Jealous of that Xbox laptop? Now there’s one for PS4 too

Accomplished amateur modder Ed Zarick is back with a self-contained PlayStation 4 laptop, the PlayBook 4. Zarick made waves recently with a similar project to produce a a portable Xbox One, the Xbook One.

Like with his previous console mod, Zarick gutted the PS4 and re-housed it in a case composed of custom-designed, 3D-printed, and laser cut components. The PlayBook includes a 22″ 1080p LED LCD screen and an optional HDMI out port if you want to connect it to another display. The console’s Wi-Fi still works, if you want to go online. The one little hitch is that the unit does not have an internal battery, and requires a 110v wall outlet to function. The console was never designed to run on a battery, and doing so would require a more serious reengineering than Zarick is capable of.

The PlayBook 4 starts at $1,095 if you provide Zarick with your own console. There is already a wait list, and the increased publicity in the last few days will do nothing to help that, so check out Zarick’s website soon if you’re interested. Zarick is an exemplary amateur engineer, with a home workshop that would make any maker jealous.

The company had a history of using the tech expo to showcase new gaming hardware, like the PlayStation VR2, but its plans for the show aren’t ones that tend to leak beforehand. Left in the dark, eager PlayStation fans tuned in to the CES live broadcast to see what the future of PlayStation might hold.

In November, I reviewed the PlayStation Portal. I was mixed on Sony’s streaming handheld at the time, frustrated with a corner-cutting execution of a good idea. It seemed like a poor value compared to simply slapping a cheaper Backbone controller on a phone. As is often the case with tech reviews, though, I only had a short window to test it out where I was more focused on the more objective side of what the Portal does and doesn’t do. Would my feelings change when I was using it naturally?

I’ve gotten the answer to that question over the past few months. While I barely touched my Portal after reviewing it in 2023, it’s quickly become a go-to device in my home as of January. I’m now breaking it out at least once a week, finding some practical use cases for it. Though my overall assessment of it hasn’t changed, I have a more tangible understanding of where it can be a useful -- if superfluous -- PS5 companion. It’s a needless luxury, but one that I’m finding that I'm happy to indulge in.

The PlayStation Portal’s launch just so happened to come right before a major life change that would shift my perspective. After living alone for three years, my girlfriend moved into my apartment last December. It’s been a natural change that’s working great so far. That shift does come with some lifestyle changes, though. We’re both crammed into a one-bedroom apartment, which means we’re sharing a tight space. We remotely do our jobs feet apart in the same room, and most evenings are spent lounging on the couch.

The PlayStation 4 is still a hugely popular console, though if you have one you might be wondering whether it's worth upgrading to the PS5. But if you do decide to go that route and you want to sell off your old PS4 - or if you're planning to use something else for gaming and you want to get ride of the PS4 for another reason - then we highly recommend that you make sure to perform a factory reset before doing so.

Doing a factory reset wipes your personal data so the device is ready for someone else to use, and it can also be useful for fixing problems with the PS4.
