HTC says it will be back with a new tablet of its own in 2015

HTC will return to making tablets bearing its own name in 2015, according to the company’s CFO Chang Chia-lin. The statement was made during a conference call at the end of October, and has been reported by Focus Taiwan. It comes soon after the launch of the Nexus 9, the so far well-received device which HTC built on behalf of Google, and its first tablet to be released in several years.

The report also quotes Jack Tong, HTC’s president for North Asia, who spoke at the Nexus 9’s launch in Taipei. He discussed the limited profitability in 7-inch tablets, particularly when the retail price is less than $170, and saw “more room for growth and product differentiation in the high-end and mid-tier tablet segments.”

This does suggest HTC won’t try to take on the Amazon Kindle Fire, or repeat the success of the Nexus 7; but instead follow the trend into which the Nexus 9 has tapped. Tablets with screens measuring somewhere in-between 8 and 10-inches have increased in popularity recently. Should HTC make a powerful, 9-inch tablet next year, it would compete with the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the iPad Mini 3, and of course, the Nexus 9.

Returning to the conference call, Chang also said the company would “consider other co-branding opportunities,” in the future. HTC has partnered with Google before the Nexus 9, and it has released smartphones with Beats Audio branding, a deal which ended after it sold its stake in the firm.

Prior to the announcement of the Nexus 9, rumors regularly appeared about HTC’s return to producing tablet devices. At the end of 2013, the firm was linked with Windows-based hardware, and CEO Peter Chou talked about a “nice and disruptive” device around the same time, which may or may not have been the Nexus 9.

Honor’s new Android phone has a feature we’ve never seen before
Promotional photo showing the Honor 90 phone in different colors.

Honor isn’t happy with Samsung taking all the mid-range smartphone glory with the excellent Galaxy A54. As such, it has launched the Honor 90 to see if it can tempt you away from Samsung's colorful and capable device. The Honor 90 matches the Galaxy A54’s price, but what about its specifications?

Honor has highlighted the screen technology as a reason to buy, and it certainly has something we haven't seen before. It’s a 6.7-inch, 2664 x 1200 pixel resolution OLED with a quad-curve shape, meaning it flows down into the chassis for comfort and style. The panel uses 3840Hz Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming to minimize flicker at low brightness, and it's the first time we've seen this level of PWM dimming on any smartphone. Other phones have 1920Hz or 2160Hz PWM dimming (such as the Realme 11 Pro+) at the most. The technology should also help reduce eye fatigue when using the screen for a long time. The screen has a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits.

There’s a chance the Apple iPad 2021 model could come in at an even lower price come Prime Day. Apple iPad is at its cheapest-ever price before Prime Day 2023
The iPad 10.2 on a table.

Amazon is currently offering some great iPad deals including being able to buy the Apple iPad (9th generation) for $250. It's currently showing as $279, reduced from $329, but add it to your basket and it gets even cheaper with $29 off at checkout bringing it down to just $250. That's $20 cheaper than it even managed during Black Friday although it was the same price back in March. It's unlikely that it'll be even cheaper during the Prime Day deals next month, although it could happen. That's why we suggest buying it now and choosing the longest shipping method so the return window spans all of Prime Day so you can return it if it somehow gets even cheaper. All you have to do is return it in its original condition for a full refund or replacement within 15 days of receipt. Want to know more about the iPad (9th generation) before you buy? Here's what to know.

Why you should buy the Apple iPad (9th generation)
The Apple iPad (9th generation) might be aging technology but thanks to Apple supporting its products for longer than most, it's still ideal if you want one of the best tablets but need to keep costs down. It's powered by the A13 Bionic chip which remains pretty reliable thanks to the App Store offering so many thousands of apps and games. A gorgeous-looking 10.2-inch Retina display gives you plenty of room to see what you're doing and it makes everything look great compared to other tablets in this price range.
