That free game for Assassin’s Creed Unity comes with a catch

Ubisoft’s website for Assassin’s Creed Unity season pass holders to redeem their free game is live, but you might want to read the terms and conditions before taking them up on it, because there is a catch. By accepting the offer of a free game as recompense for Unity‘s rocky launch, you forever void your right to take legal action against Ubisoft regarding Unity or its season pass.

The gist is that by accepting the free game, you agree to never seek further compensation from Ubisoft or any of its affiliates for problems related to Unity or any of its future content. This applies to both personal and class-action lawsuits. The full, dense legalese reads as follow:

“You hereby irrevocably and unconditionally RELEASE, WAIVE, AND FOREVER DISCHARGE AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE Ubisoft Entertainment S.A., and each of its past, present and future divisions, parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, predecessors, successors and assigns, together with all of their respective past, present and future employees, officers, shareholders, directors and agents, and those who give recommendations, directions, or instructions or engage in risk evaluation or loss control activities regarding the Campaign (all for the purposes herein referred to as “Released Parties”) FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY TO YOU, your assigns, heirs, and next of kin FOR ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, CHARGES, LAWSUITS, DEBTS, DEFENSES, ACTIONS OR CAUSES OF ACTION, OBLIGATIONS, DAMAGES, LOSS OF SERVICE, COMPENSATION, PAIN AND SUFFERING, ATTORNEYS’ FEES, AND COST AND EXPENSES OF SUIT, KNOWN OR UNKNOWN, SUSPECTED OR UNSUSPECTED, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE PURCHASE, ACQUISITION, RENTAL, POSSESSION AND/OR USAGE, AND/OR THE INTENT TO PURCHASE, ACQUIRE, RENT, POSSESS AND/OR USE, THE ASSASSIN’S CREED UNITY VIDEO GAME AND/OR THE ASSASSIN’S CREED UNITY SEASON PASS ON ANY AND ALL PLATFORMS, AND/OR RELATED TO THE CAMPAIGN, WHETHER CAUSED BY THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE RELEASED PARTIES OR OTHERWISE.”

In November, Ubisoft announced that everyone would be given Unity‘s first add-on content, Dead Kings for free, as an apology for the notoriously buggy launch. Fans that had already purchased the season pass, which includes Dead Kings, would instead be able to redeem a free game from the company’s catalog, such as Far Cry 4 or The Crew.

That generous offer is now ready, but there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch, as the saying goes. Know what you’re getting into and read before you sign, which is good advice generally for dealing with all the ballooning EULAs that consumers regularly encounter these days.

Eville characters look surprised or plot their next actions in key art.

On September 14, Microsoft held another ID@Xbox stream to highlight many titles in the works for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S by independent developers. While not every game shown is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, quite a few of them are, and they paint a promising picture for the subscription service's future before you even consider Microsoft's impending first-party lineup.
The ID@Xbox Fall Showcase highlighted that this month alone we're getting rhythm shooter Metal Hellsinger, wacky racing game You Suck at Parking, mythological sim management game Amazing Cultivation Simulator, and intense 2D action game Moonscars on the service. More games are poised to hit the service in 2023, with the highlights being the social deduction game Eville and Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, a sequel to the hilarious 2021 game Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (Turnip Boy has a gun now).
This is the full list of games shown that are already on or are coming soon to Xbox Game Pass over the course of the next year:

Assassin’s Creed Mirage does not have an Adults Only rating or loot boxes
Assassin's Creed Mirage Basim

After a weekend of confusion, Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin's Creed Mirage does not currently have an Adults Only rating. The publisher chalks the issue up to a mistake and reaffirms that the game will not feature gambling, as an Xbox listing indicated.

Following Saturday's Ubisoft Forward stream, fans noticed that the Xbox store page for Assassin's Creed Mirage had an Adults Only rating attached to it. The rating came with some standard warnings, noting the game had intense violence, partial nudity, and more. What really caught players' attention was the inclusion of "Real Gambling" in the rating, which seemed to be what earned the game its AO rating.
