Starting next summer, OnStar users will be able to sign up for a driver’s feedback function that will assess their habits behind the wheel for 90 days and provide a report on how they drive. The score will take into account what GM calls “important driving metrics,” though more specific details are being kept under wraps. The report will also include tips on how each motorist can improve his or her driving habits.
Additionally, drivers who choose to send their score to Progressive Insurance through the company’s Snapshot program could be eligible for a discount on their plan if OnStar’s report shows that they drive well. GM has not announced if it is planning on partnering up with other insurance companies.
GM says it developed the driver’s feedback service to make roads safer.
“The driver assessment is meant to help people better understand how they drive and give them feedback on how to be better, smarter drivers. This new service truly shows the power of the connected car,” explained the automaker in a statement.
OnStar’s driver’s feedback service will be available on most 2015 GM cars, all 2016 models as well as select 2013s and 2014s. For the time being the driver’s feedback service will only be available in the United States.
