Planning a movie marathon in the great outdoors? Meet Flicks

What’s the worst part about camping? You can’t binge yourself to sleep on Netflix, of course — not without hunching over a tiny phone or tablet, anyway. For those who want to take their entertainment anywhere in style, Dashbon, Inc. has created a new project on Indiegogo called Flicks: Not just a projector, not just a Bluetooth speaker, but a combo device designed to bring your audio/visual adventures along anywhere you go.

Touted by its creator as a “mobile party powerhouse,” Flicks takes all the features we’ve come to expect from a modern Bluetooth speaker — a speakerphone, powerful rechargeable battery, and a USB charger for your devices — and adds the element of HD video via an on-board LED projector. For video, Flicks packs an HDMI port, allowing for wired connection to your mobile device, as well as connecting mobile streaming solutions like the Roku Streaming Stick, Fire TV stick, or Chromecast dongle where Wi-Fi is available.

Specs for the Flicks are pretty impressive as well, considering all the talents that lie within its rounded borders. The device comes in two iterations: the regular Flicks, which boasts 4 hours of audio/visual playback and a whopping 28 hours of music playback per charge, and the Flicks Extended Range, which doubles those figures to 8 hours and 56 hours respectively.

Video is reproduced by a 720p LED projector rated to output 700 Lumens — not fantastic in the light of day, but it should pop enough to satisfy in dark rooms or, say, on the inside tent wall once the campfire has died down. The Flicks’ Ultra Throw lens is designed to deliver a clear 100-inch image from 8 feet. Dashbon also promises “high-fidelity” sound from the device’s dual drivers and subwoofer, though accomplishing that feat is always easier said than done.

Selling for an Early Bird special price of $450 for the regular Flicks, and $530 for the Extend Range edition (add $10 shipping in the U.S., and more abroad), the project had already garnered nearly all of its $50,000 funding goal at time of publication, with just under three weeks left on the clock. So if all goes to plan, the device should have no problem meeting the expected May delivery date.

If you’re looking for a bit more from your mobile entertainment device, you can put a Flicks on order by checking out Dashbon’s Indiegogo page today.

Morel Audio BIGGIE in the Ruby Red finish, sitting atop a coffee table.

Despite its name, the Morel Biggie wireless speaker is a very portable Bluetooth speaker. You can easily carry the portable, battery-operated speaker around from room to room or while out and about thanks to the built-in leather-like handle.

Measuring just 7 inches tall by 7 inches wide and looking to be about 3.5 inches or so in depth, the 5.7-pound Biggie boasts advanced digital signal processing (DSP) technology that optimizes sound quality. It includes a two-way bass reflex system with 60-watt Class D amplifiers; a custom-made 4-inch, 45-watt woofer; and Morel’s own 25mm, 15W soft dome tweeter. Bose has a bigger Bluetooth speaker to power your next pool party
Bose SoundLink Max in blue.

Sometimes, your outdoor (or even indoor) gatherings require a bit more power when it comes to blasting out the tunes. Bose's new SoundLink Max is designed for just that scenario, and it can be preordered in black or blue starting May 2 for $399. Shipping expected on May 16 -- just in time for the start of the summer season.

The SoundLink Max is essentially a larger, more powerful version of the existing SoundLink Flex. The two Bluetooth speakers share a lot in common, including their design. Both are fully waterproof and dustproof (and can float) thanks to an IP67 rating, both have a USB-C connection for charging, and both can be wirelessly linked to other Bose Bluetooth speakers and soundbars via SimpleSync.

The JBL Xtreme 4 JBL

Seminal speaker maker JBL has taken the veil off of its 2024 lifestyle lineup, which includes three new portable speakers and two new party speakers, all with upgrades that include more power, new colors, improved Bluetooth connectivity, recycled materials, and multi-speaker connectivity with Auracast.
The new JBL portables
JBL announced three new portable Bluetooth speakers today at CES 2024 in Las Vegas -- the football-sized JBL Xtreme 4, the compact and clippable JBL Clip 5, and the smallest of the bunch, the JBL Go 4. All of the new speakers maintain their rugged IP67 ratings, but feature improved battery life, more power, and better bass, as well as an upgrade in their Bluetooth connectivity to version 3.5 LE (Low Energy), which means lower latency, lower power consumption, and better audio quality. But more importantly, it allows all three new JBL speakers to be Auracast-enabled, which allows multi-speaker connectivity with an unlimited number of other JBL Auracast speakers, regardless of whether they're the same model of speaker or not.
