Asus’ new razor-thin UX305 ultrabook primed to slice the competition in half

This Monday, hardware hawker Asus announced the debut of the world’s thinnest ultrabook, the new Zenbook UX305.

At just 2.6 pounds in weight and half an inch thin, the UX305 is built with portability and productivity at the forefront of its design. The 13.3-inch notebook will feature an Intel Core M 5Y10 processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 128GB of solid state storage and a 1080p IPS display.

Connectivity options will include three USB 3.0 ports, one micro-HDMI out, and an SD/SDXC combo reader for increased storage.

For the resolution junkies out there Asus is also planning to release a 3,200 x 1,800 version of the notebook, though it won’t be ready to ship for at least a few more months. That’s a shame, as competitors like Dell are offering the same resolution on stores shelves today. Asus will offer the panel for less, however, as it says the QHD+ version will be $999 when hits store shelves in April.

The best part? The company says we can expect the latest in the Zenbook lineup to hit US shelves today for only $699 retail. That’s an arm and a leg less than most other comparable ultrabooks, and should make for some stiff competition for Lenovo’s Yoga 3 Pro and Samsung’s ATIV Book 9. Even Dell’s XPS 13 should be wary: it’s a great notebook, but it’s $100 more for fairly similar hardware, Core M processor aside.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place

This tiny ThinkPad can’t quite keep up with the MacBook Air M2
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3 rear view showing lid and logo.

While the laptop industry continues to move toward 14-inch laptops and larger, the 13-inch laptop remains an important category. One of the best is the Apple MacBook Air M2, with an extremely thin and well-built chassis, great performance, and incredibly long battery life.

Lenovo has recently introduced the third generation of its ThinkPad X1 Nano, one of the lightest laptops we've tested and a good performer as well. It's stiff competition, but which of these two diminutive laptops stands apart?
