New features make Destiny’s companion app essential for every player

Destiny‘s freshly released v1.1.1 update brought more than weapon balance tweaks and bug fixes; it also added some new features to the game’s companion app, available on Android and iOS (Note: This was only tested on iOS so far). Players now have the ability to manage the inventory of their character(s) from inside the app, including the ability to equip/unequip gear and move weapons, armor, and inventory items to and from your Vault storage.

The app features have a lot of flexibility. You can shift gear around whether or not you’re signed into the game. You can even watch the changes happen in real time if you move items to/from the Vault or equip/unequip something on the character you happen to be using.

This added functionality is primarily useful for those Destiny players with more than one character. Previously, swapping gear or materials between two of your own characters involved a laborious process of traveling to the game’s Tower social hub, depositing items in the Vault, signing out, signing in with the other character, going to the Tower again, and retrieving the desired gear from the Vault.

Now you can manage your inventory entirely inside the app, by simply selecting your character of choice, navigating to their gear or inventory page, and tapping the item you’d like to move. A new “Manage Item” prompt appears at the bottom of the screen, and that’s where you go to drop something in the Vault. If it’s a piece of gear that you don’t currently have armed, there’s also an Equip option. Just note: Equipped gear must be unequipped before it can be deposited in the Vault.

I rescued Destiny 2 ‘new lights’ from a game-ruining fate

Destiny 2 introduced a new activity in December called Dares of Eternity as a part of the Bungie 30th Anniversary pack. In it, a team of six Guardians faces off against enemies and obstacles in an activity that humorously models its presentation on that of classic game shows like The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds, and is meant as a comical, lighthearted bit of adventuring with some quality loot at the end.

The problem with Dares of Eternity is that it automatically launches the first time you boot Destiny 2 during this 30th Anniversary event. That’s all well and good for experienced players who are decked out with the latest high-level equipment. But new players, or players returning from long breaks, are at a severe disadvantage in terms of leveling relative to the enemies, and are effectively stuck in an unending loop of getting their space-butts handed to them.

Apple finally makes it harder to stalk Android users with its new Tracker Detect app

Apple has announced and released a new AirTags tracker app for Android called Tracker Detect. This has been done to resolve one of the privacy issues inadvertently introduced with AirTags earlier this year -- the ability to track someone without their knowledge. Once it was installed and a scan was initiated, the app was able to highlight unknown AirTag trackers nearby, essentially revealing the location of strangers and opening the door for planting an AirTag on someone without their knowledge to keep tabs on them.

AirTags were released earlier in the year as a rival to Tile and other Bluetooth trackers. They leveraged Apple's Find My network to help users track lost items by communicating with a combination of Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband. Unlike Tile trackers, they could also be used to geolocate lost items. However, AirTags also came with an unintended consequence: They could allow people to be tracked without their knowledge by simply tagging their clothes or personal property. Apple users would be protected against it as an iPhone running iOS 15 would be able to detect that an unknown AirTag was found moving with you, but that was not an option for Android devices.

Destiny 2 adds Halo-like weapons to celebrate Bungie’s 30th birthday

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, Bungie is adding a variety of Halo-inspired weapons to Destiny 2. The weapons will be available to everyone, not just those who purchase the 30th Anniversary Pack, and are visually inspired by some of Halo's most famous weapons. The celebration went live today alongside a trailer celebrating the anniversary.
