Forget Wi-Fi, Panasonic’s new security cam sports 4G connectivity

Web-connected security cameras are great for monitoring your property and belongings, but what if the place you need to surveil doesn’t have a Wi-Fi connection? Without a network to hop on so it can sling video to the cloud, you’ve generally got to store everything locally, which can be a pain to set up.

To solve this problem, Panasonic has developed a new product called Nubo: a standalone security camera that boasts 4G mobile Internet connectivity, allowing users to save and access video without a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.

“Consumers have long had to compromise on mobility and connectivity when it came to their surveillance needs, bound either by location or connectivity,” said Tijmen Vos, CTO of Panasonic Cameramanager and product evangelist of Panasonic Nubo. “Our vision is to deliver a product that allows users the freedom and flexibility of choosing where the camera can be used and the confidence in knowing that the data created is securely transmitted and stored. With the introduction of Nubo, we’re putting the control of safety and surveillance into the user’s hands.”

Set to launch later this year, the Nubo platform will come complete with a high-definition camera, mobile data plan, mobile app for controls and alerts, an external battery pack and add-on options, and even a few gigabytes of secure cloud storage.

Oh, and did we mention it’s also waterproof? Nubo carries an IP66 rating, which means it’s both water- and dust-proof, and can therefore be mounted and used outside.

It’s not quite available for purchase quite yet, but Nubo will be available for pre-order in the U.K., the Netherlands and the United States starting in April 2015, though it’s not expected to ship until next year.

Flying and roving security cams are here, but are we ready for them?
sunflower home awareness system labs scene 2

Security cameras have grown increasingly powerful over the years, capable of sending out motion alerts, triggering your smart home, and much more. The only downside is that they are relatively stationary; unless something passes in front of the camera, you won't catch it.

The good news is that mobile security cameras are now a thing. Cameras like the upcoming Ring Always Home Cam or Sunflower Labs' Beehive can fly around your yard and home to keep an eye on things, while some robot vacuums come equipped with security cameras that keep an eye on your home while cleaning it at the same time.

Parrot’s 4G-connected Anafi Ai drone is the Google Maps car of the skies
Parrot Anafi Ai drone flying by satellitesl.

Drones have exploded in popularity, but their range often leaves something to be desired. Midrange drones can reach as far as 1.5 miles, while high-end consumer drones can go as far as 4.5 miles away. Distance has been the limit to true freedom -- until now. The new Parrot Anafi Ai drone uses 4G connectivity to eliminate any and all range restrictions.

You can precisely control the drone from any distance, no line of sight is required, and obstacles won't interfere with the connection. Thanks to the embedded Secure Element, the link between your phone and your drone is encrypted. This provides thorough data privacy and reduces the risk of someone hacking and stealing the drone.

If you receive packages at home while you are away, you should invest in a storage security camera. These little cameras capture what’s happening outside of your front door. Some run on batteries, and others run off your home’s electrical system.

A local storage security camera is a choice that makes sense if you’re worried about criminals accessing your security cameras remotely. A local storage solution means that you don’t have to rely on the cloud to store your security footage and can keep your cameras offline.
