AMC’s upcoming “companion series” to The Walking Dead is seemingly off to a good start. The first image from the series debuted online this week, and the project already confirmed for a two-season order.

The first photo from the still-untitled series features stars Kim Dickens (Gone Girl) and Cliff Curtis (Missing). The pair reportedly play a divorced teacher (Curtis) and guidance counselor (Dickens) who must work together to survive a world suddenly filled with flesh-hungry zombies.

Accompanying the image was the announcement that AMC had committed to a two-season order for the series, which will be set in Los Angeles and unfold parallel to the events of The Walking Dead. The first season will feature six one-hour episodes and a premiere (on AMC) this summer.

“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television,” said AMC president Charlie Collier in a statement accompanying the announcement. “From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out.”

The Walking Dead is currently in the midst of its fifth season, with a sixth season expected to premiere this fall.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon ending, explained
Daryl on his knees looking angry in a scene from The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is the latest in a flurry of spin-offs of The Walking Dead, expanding the franchise into new areas previously unexplored. This one focuses on fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), one of the few who didn’t exist in the comic books but was created solely for the show. He mysteriously ends up in Paris, providing an entirely new setting and a new primary language for the series (don’t worry, there are subtitles) along with lots of F-bombs (no language restrictions on this show!) and a Last of Us-like journey.

How did he get there, what happened, and what’s in store for the already confirmed second season? With a massive reveal in the end, there’s lots to love, and look forward to, about The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

5 Walking Dead characters who deserve their own spinoff
Judith from The Walking Dead walking with a backpack and weapons.

The Walking Dead was one of the most popular series on AMC, spawning numerous spinoffs. Some of these were released while the main series was airing, while others debuted after the postapocalyptic horror drama ended its run. Most recently, there has been The Walking Dead: Dead City, which is centered around Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, with Norman Reedus reprising the role of his fan-favorite character. The first and arguably most successful spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, will end after its eighth season is completed this year. That show focuses on an almost entirely new (and often changing) cast that was eventually bolstered by the arrival of Morgan (Lennie James) from the original series in crossover fashion.

Bottom line: There’s no shortage of The Walking Dead stories to be told. If fan service means anything, there are a few other characters die-hards who would love to see get their own spinoff.
