AMD spills the beans on July release of Windows 10

We’ve known since last month that Windows 10 will be arriving this summer, but now we’re able to narrow down the launch date even further. The details have yet to be confirmed by the company, but it seems that the newest version of Microsoft’s operating system will arrive in July.

The source for this information isn’t anyone at Microsoft. It was gleaned instead from AMD’s most recent earnings call. When asked a question related to AMD’s inventory plans, company president and CEO Lisa Su said,“with the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we are watching sort of the impact of that on the back-to-school season, and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up.”

It is certainly possible that AMD’s information is wrong, but this does line up with what we have previously reported regarding Microsoft wanting to ship the OS before back-to-school shopping starts in August. Su didn’t mention a specific date, but we likely won’t have to wait long to find out.

Microsoft’s Build developer conference takes place at the end of this month, from April 29 to May 1. Many details are expected to surface at the conference, including the release date for Windows 10 and the name of Microsoft’s new web browser, currently codenamed Project Spartan.

Windows 10 will launch in a total of 190 countries and will be available in 111 different languages. In addition to the aforementioned new browser, the operating system will also bring a slew of new and tweaked features, including the return of the Windows start menu.

For those who want to test-drive the new OS, the Windows 10 Technical Preview, now entering its final stages, is available to members of Microsoft’s Windows Insider program.
