Digital Trends reveals inaugural Car of the Year Awards and 2015 winners

Car of the Year Awarded to the Formidable Audi A3

PORTLAND, ORE., APRIL 28, 2015 – Leading consumer technology publisher Digital Trends named the 2015 winners of its inaugural Car of the Year Awards, including Car of the Year award winner the Audi A3. The Digital Trends Car of the Year Awards shine a spotlight on the best of the best and rate the entire automobile across a variety of metrics: drivability, value, technology, safety, styling, and more.

To pick the winners across six categories and one overall “Car of the Year Award,” Digital Trends editors and experts and hit the deserts, mountains, highways, and city streets in the Palm Springs area of California cruising three pre-selected routes through canyons, across deserts, and around mountain springs, routes that stretched for as much as two hundred miles. The editors then deliberated to choose the finalists, award winners in each category, and overall award winner.

“Today’s cars are far more than people movers, they’re platforms for technology,” said Nick Jaynes, Automotive Editor at Digital Trends. “Modern cars not only transport us from place to place; they keep us safe, entertain us, and help keep us connected. Accordingly, we wanted to evaluate not just how cars handle but the technology that drives them as well. We put this year’s nominees through a rigorous testing process, and the winners are true standouts. Congratulations to all of this year’s finalists and winners!”

Intel Xe-HPG DG2 leak reveals specs of five graphics cards launching later this year
Concept art of an Intel DG2 graphics card.

Following confirmation by an Intel employee that Xe-HPG DG2 graphics cards are "right around the corner," specs for five different cards across mobile and, potentially, desktop have leaked out courtesy of Igor's Lab.

The leak confirms earlier rumors that the flagship model of the DG2 range will feature 512 EUs (execution units) and 16GB of  GDDR6 video memory on a 256-bit bus. This card -- tentatively named the DG2-512EU -- isn't for desktop, though. Reports suggest Intel is focused on the mobile market, and that DG2 chips were originally planned as part of the Tiger Lake-H platform, which is apparently launching next week.

Samsung Galaxy S21 will be a digital key for Audi, BMW, Ford, Genesis cars
2020 audi rs q8 high performance suv unveiled with 600 horsepower official 3

The Samsung Galaxy S21 series of phones is finally here, and soon you'll be able to use the new smartphone to do more than just text or browse social media. Samsung is working with Audi, BMW, Ford, and Genesis (the luxury division of Hyundai) to use the Galaxy S21 as a "digital key," in place of a traditional key fob.

Digital key technology allows a paired smartphone to automatically unlock the doors when it's near a vehicle. It also enables a car to be started and driven as long as the phone is on board. It's similar to the keyless-entry systems already offered by many automakers, but without a separate key fob.

Digital Trends Top Tech of CES 2021 Awards
Top Tech of CES 2021 Awards Feature

A year like none other deserved a gadget show like none other, and CES 2021 delivered. The first all-digital show in the 55-year history of CES arrived as a necessary measure to keep attendees safe amid COVID, leaving the entire industry to experience via webcam what once occupied a convention center the size of a small city. It was enough to make us pine for the days when all we had to complain about were crusty press lunches and getting smacked with selfie sticks.

But it wasn’t all bad! While we missed the electricity of the live events, the camaraderie of coworkers, and the delight of meeting new people on buses, CES 2021 proved that the technology industry is uniquely suited to carry on in an all-digital environment. These are the companies that invented half the tools, after all. Press conferences went off without a hitch, companies shipped us prototypes to play with, and Digital Trends' unique CES Experience Center made it possible to virtually come together as an editorial team and share our impressions with you, even from afar.
