DTS’ Play-Fi multi-room speakers land Spotify Connect

DTS’ Play-Fi, the company’s answer to Apple Airplay and Sonos’ wireless streaming systems, has now added Spotify compatibility. Play-Fi’s open platform, which is compatible with speaker brands such as Polk, Definitive Technology and Harman Kardon, gives users the ability to stream lossless audio to multiple rooms, zones and devices at the same time via wi-fi.

“With its massive song library and more than one billion playlists created by users, Spotify is a significant addition to the Play-Fi ecosystem,” said general manager of the Play-Fi Division at DTS Dannie Lau in a statement. “We believe that Spotify users around the world will appreciate the superior sound quality and convenience of the Play-Fi audio experience for all of their music.”

DTS Play-Fi’s added compatibility will be available directly through Spotify Connect, which lets users control music streaming through their Play-Fi enabled speakers from Spotify. The service is available for Spotify Premium users and will be accessible within the Spotify app, initially only via the desktop platform. In addition, users will be able to launch Spotify directly through their speakers’ Play-Fi app, alongside Deezer, Pandora, and Songza.

“The partnership with DTS Play-Fi gives Spotify Premium users an amazing audio experience in their homes,” said Spotify’s Owen Parry in a statement. “We want to be ubiquitous and providing a high quality in-home music experiences to our users is crucial to attaining that goal.”

As Play-Fi is an open standard, this new compatibility with Spotify will allow users to listen to the streaming music service through multiple brands of speakers all from the same wireless ecosystem. The service notes, however, that at launch only products from Definitive Technology, Phorus, Polk Audio and Wren will support streaming from Spotify Premium accounts to any one Play-Fi speaker via Wi-Fi.

Additional support for Play-Fi’s ‘whole home technology’ via Android and iOS devices will come later this year, according to the company.
