DirecTV to turn your Apple Watch into a remote control

All aboard the Apple Watch money train!

DirecTV is the latest company to announce that it will be releasing support for the Apple Watch, which it claims will bring new levels of integration to the user experience. Previously DirecTV had developed an app for the iPhone that allowed its subscribers to control their DVR’s from their iPhones. Now DirecTV is updating its app and adding support for the Apple Watch.

Users will be able to play, pause, fast-forward, and rewind on screen content from the Watch app. Aside from the generic controls, the app will also allow users to set shows to record, navigate the on-screen menu, and more.

DirecTV LLC Big Time Savings

“We are excited to give our customers an even easier and seamless way to engage with their favorite TV shows and movies,” said Tony Goncalves, DirecTV’s Senior VP of Digital Entertainment Products. DirecTV was just recently acquired by AT&T and is the largest satellite TV provider in the world. Though the app’s functionality is certainly fun, it does still lack a few basic functions — notably the ability to change the channel.

Logically, the new smart app requires an Internet-connected HD DVR from DirecTV, so users without one will have to upgrade to fully utilize their new Apple device. The app certainly attacks the age-old problem of losing the television remote. The Apple Watch will likely continue to see connected home functionality added through apps and eventually hardware down the line. It won’t be long before our entire media centers can be controlled from one app on our phone or watch.

It’s reasonable to speculate that apps of this nature will be developed by other providers such as Time Warner. It would be foolish to lose out on the integrated smart home market, and with the Apple Watch, service providers need build only an app rather than a remote or a full device. Simple, right?

How to measure your wrist for Apple Watch bands
Calibrating an Apple Watch strap.

When Digital Trends got its hands on a refurbished Apple Watch 4, it was perfect -- a 40mm case size with a baby blue Sport Band. The only problem was, even at its tightest setting, the band was too big. It either had to slide it up the arm for it to stay or let it drop to the wrist bone like a bracelet. Eventually, this loose band was replaced with a Sport Loop that could be tightened to a perfect fit.

Apple has caught on that a one-size-fits-all style doesn't work for everyone, and last year, the company introduced the Solo Loop and the Braided Solo Loop to its vast collection. Unlike the Sport Loop, which is infinitely adjustable, the Solo or Braided band -- not to mention the buckle and even various sport bands -- should be more precisely calibrated. If you got one of the Solo bands for your watch, our recent article explains how to measure your wrist specifically for it.

7 ways to listen to music on your Apple Watch
Apple Music on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch does it all: Personalized fitness regimens, intuitive sleep monitoring, extensive Siri capabilities, and an entire suite of iPhone skills (texting, calling, reminders, etc.) for when you want to ditch the phone. Speaking of which, one of the greatest Apple Watch features is the wearable's ability to connect and stream, both online and offline (more on that below), to a number of today's most popular music streaming services. To help you better understand exactly what music apps you can interface with your Apple Watch, and what each service can and cannot do, we've put together this guide to highlight the seven best ways to listen to music on your Apple Watch right now.

Keep in mind that certain features will only be compatible with particular hardware versions of the Apple Watch. The same goes for the operating system, as a number of music apps require watchOS 4.1 or higher for all in-app functions to work properly. Currently, the most up-to-date Apple Watch OS is watchOS 7.5, but with WWDC 2021 on the way, we can expect that to change and bring some new WatchOS features as well. We'll update this post accordingly.
