Smart and JBL squeeze 16 speakers into a 2016 Fortwo

It’s easy to think of things that won’t fit in a Smart ForTwo, but Smart recently decided to put a positive spin on the car’s small size by showing what will fit.

The carmaker teamed up with JBL – which supplies audio systems for production Smart cars – to cram as much sound equipment as possible into a 2016 Fortwo. Welcome to the Smart Forgigs concept.

What Smart describes as a “concert hall on wheels” includes 16 speakers, five amplifiers, and two subwoofers. The complete system has an organ-tenderizing maximum output of 5,720 watts.

Equipping the Forgigs with that much audio firepower meant finding some creative places to put things. There are three midrange speakers in each door, and the trunk is completely full of speakers, subwoofers, and other equipment.

The car sports 328 feet of cabling and 32 square feet of insulating material. There’s also interior and exterior ambient lighting, which can be controlled from an integrated DJ console.

Smart says the ForGigs can be used as a mobile amplifier for live concerts by street musicians. It will probably be better in that capacity than as a car, as rear visibility is probably somewhat compromised by all of that sound equipment in the back.

The JBL system most likely doesn’t help the Smart’s performance either. U.S. versions of the 2016 Fortwo get an 898-cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine with just 89 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque. That’s only enough for a top speed of 96 mph, so extra weight is certainly the enemy of Smart drivers.

But while tiny city cars like the Fortwo haven’t made much of an impression in the U.S., customized cars that push the limits of good taste and sound judgment thrive in the Land of the Free.

The Smart Forgigs would be right at home at events like the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas, where aftermarket companies display outlandish show cars in order to draw attention to their products or their fabricating skills.

What better place for a car designed to facilitate impromptu concerts than the streets of Sin City?

Huawei’s cylindrical Sound X smart speaker has a French connection
huawei sound x devialet hands on features price photos release date side

Huawei has a new smart speaker called the Sound X, and like the partnerships that have benefited its phones so much, it has co-engineered this speaker with an audio expert. This audio company may not be as instantly recognizable as Leica or Porsche Design, but Devialet, a French brand best known for its astonishing Phantom speakers, has brought a lot of what makes those special to Huawei’s Sound X.
Devialet's tech inside
The Devialet Phantom’s otherworldly design makes it memorable to those who haven’t heard it, but the sci-fi style takes a backseat once you’ve been in the same room as one blasting out tunes. We called the $3,000 Phantom Gold, “near perfect,” and the, “finest all-in-one wireless speaker money can buy,” in our 2016 review. It is unlike anything else, and much of the audio brilliance comes from Devialet’s technology inside.

We’ll come back to that in a moment, but let’s talk about the Sound X’s look and features first. Although it worked with Devialet on the engineering, software, and design of the Sound X, Huawei hasn’t aped the Phantom’s unique design and has instead looked toward the Apple HomePod for inspiration. The result is a rounded-off cylinder with a stain-resistant fabric base and glossy plastic top.

Amazon Echo still king among smart speakers despite declining U.S. market share

Both Apple and Google have rabid followings in the smart speaker market, but neither one comes close to Amazon’s market share. According to a recent report from eMarketer, Amazon will continue to comfortably hold its market lead throughout 2021, with roughly 70% of smart speaker users choosing an Amazon Echo device. On the other hand, 70% is lower than last year’s reported usage of 72.9%.

Market analysis firm eMarketer predicts that Amazon’s market lead will continue to decrease as both Google and Apple strengthen their product offerings and bring more to the smart assistant market. They estimate that next year, 69.7% of smart speaker users will be loyal to Amazon, 31.7% will use Google-branded smart speakers, and 18.4% will use other types of smart speakers. eMarketer notes this percentage adds up to over 100% because some users employ multiple brands.
