Shelby American’s new Super Snake ‘Stang churns out over 750 supercharged horses

Shelby American has worked its magic on yet another Mustang, this time focusing on the sixth-generation GT.

The 2015 Super Snake is the dominant horsepower alpha of the Mustang herd, and while this year’s version doesn’t pump out quite as much power (yet) as the previous generation, it gains substantially better performance hardware.

Shelby starts with the 2015 Ford Mustang GT, provided by the buyer, of course, and then adds on lightweight carbon fiber pieces, including a front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, hood, mirror caps, and rear fascia. Other visual changes include a black anodized grille, racing stripes, a rear spoiler, and 20-inch WELD Racing wheels.

Inside, Shelby adds a short-throw shifter, three-gauge dash cluster, embroidered headrests, floor mats, and Shelby sill plates.

Now to the ‘Super’ part of the Snake.

The Ford GT’s 5.0-liter V8 has been upgraded with Ford Performance half-shafts and Ford Performance 3.73 gears, and paired with a Ford Performance supercharger, producing more than 650 horsepower. That sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission (a.k.a. the proper choice).

Other enhancements include a — I’ll stop saying “Ford Performance,” now — stiffer suspension and handling package, a Borla stainless steel exhaust, Wilwood front brakes, and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

“Wait a minute,” you’re saying, “the title says over 750 horsepower; what gives?”

For those who look at 650 hp and laugh, for those who measure a sports car’s appeal by its percentage of “Hellcat horsepower,” Shelby will oblige.

Customers can order a Kenne Bell or Whipple supercharger, an upgraded cooling system, single-piece driveshaft, and Wilwood rear brakes to achieve a meatier 750+ horsepower (about 106% Hellcat horsepower). The “+” is because Shelby obviously likes round numbers.

Speaking of round numbers, only 300 Shelby Super Snakes will be produced this each, each costing $50,000, in addition to the cost of the Ford Mustang GT.
