Directed by David Wain and co-written by Wain and his frequent collaborator Michael Showalter, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp unfolds on the first day of the summer season at Camp Firewood, and features much of the original film’s cast reprising the roles they played in the original film, albeit several years younger.
Fittingly, the new teaser is a love letter of sorts to the ’80s summer-camp experience — and summer camp movies — that inspired Wet Hot American Summer, filled with cheesy VHS-era graphics, scenes of overly happy campers, and even some bad tracking that may be a little NSFW. And if you think some of the cast is looking a little older in this “prequel,” well … just chalk it up to the magic of Camp Firewood.
Returning to play younger versions of their characters from the 2001 film are Showalter, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Christopher Meloni, Marguerite Moreau, Zak Orth, Amy Poehler, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, and Molly Shannon. They’re joined by new cast additions Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), John Slattery (Mad Men), Lake Bell (In A World), Paul Scheer (The League), and Randall Park (Veep), as well as a long list of cameos from familiar Hollywood faces.
Originally scheduled to debut on Netflix in mid-July, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp will now arrive on the streaming video service July 31.
