Get yourself ready for a train wreck, because MTV’s 2015 VMAs are shaping up to be quite the event. Miley Cyrus announced today that she’ll be the host of MTV’s music-centric awards show this August. The annual event will also pit Beyoncé and Taylor Swift against each other in multiple categories.
Between MTV’s choice in host and nominees, the 2015 Video Music Awards will feature players from some of the most talked-about moments in the show’s recent history. Back in 2009, Swift beat out Beyoncé for Best Female Video, which prompted Kanye West to infamously crash her speech and very publicly rain on her parade. This year, both singers are again up for Female Video, along with Best Pop Video and Video of the Year.
Meanwhile, Cyrus as host is also drawing buzz, given that she had her own notorious VMA moment. In 2013, she and Robin Thicke teamed up for a performance that the Internet couldn’t stop talking about. You may remember it as the spectacle that brought “twerking” into your parents’ and even grandparents’ vocabulary.
According to Cyrus, who announced her big news on Twitter, MTV wouldn’t let her perform, so she gets to host instead. Words alone apparently wouldn’t suffice, so she donned an alien costume and sandwich boards for the big reveal. As you do.

The show raises important questions, and not just about who will come out on top: Swift and her record-breaking success, or Beyoncé, who has even inspired a skyscraper with a music video. Will West be able to refrain from offending anyone? Can Cyrus possibly shock people more than she did in 2013? We say doubtful and probably, but we’ll find out for sure on Aug. 30 when the live show airs at 9 PM ET.
