The star of the Lamborghini stand at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show will be the mighty 740-horsepower Aventador Roadster Superveloce. Not one to rest on its laurels, the Raging Bull is already looking forward to next year’s Geneva Motor Show, where it will introduce the Huracán Spyder.
Designed to fight head-to-head against the new Ferrari 488 Spider, the Spyder will be nearly identical to the Huracán coupe from the rocker panels up to the belt line. Above that, it is expected to gain a full cloth soft top that will open and close in seconds at the push of a button. The Spyder could further stand out from the Huracán thanks to a model-specific engine cover with flying buttresses, but the cockpit will be carried over from the coupe to the convertible with only minor modifications. An unofficial rendering published by TopSpeed gives us an idea of what it could look like.
Lamborghini will not make any mechanical modifications, at least not initially. Power for the Huracán Spyder will come from a naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine tuned to make 601 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 413 foot-pounds of torque at 6,500 rpm. The ten-cylinder will send power to all four wheels via a smooth-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission controlled by shift paddles and a sport-tuned all-wheel drive system.
The Spyder will inevitably be a little heavier than the Huracán coupe, but it will be no slouch. Early estimates peg its zero-t0-62 mph time at about 3.3 seconds and its top speed at an Autobahn-worthy 202 mph.
Lamborghini will gradually release more details about the long-awaited Huracán Spyder over the next few months, and the convertible is tentatively scheduled to go on sale in a little less than a year as a 2017 model. It’s safe to assume it will carry a small premium over its coupe counterpart.
