Tom Cruise says Mission: Impossible 6 could begin shooting next year

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation hasn’t debuted in theaters yet, but Tom Cruise is already revving up the hype for a sequel.

During an interview on The Daily Show, Cruise revealed that preproduction has already begun on a sixth installment of the blockbuster espionage action franchise.

“We’re starting to work on it now,” Cruise told Jon Stewart. “We’ll probably start shooting it next summer.”

While there’s no reason to doubt Cruise, it would certainly be a break from the usual schedule for a Mission: Impossible movie to go into production that soon. Previous installments of the series have always hit theaters at least four years apart.

Paramount Pictures has yet to confirm Cruise’s announcement, with the studio likely waiting to see how Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation performs at the box office before confirming another sequel. Collectively, the franchise has earned more than $739 million at the U.S. box office from the four previous films, and more than $2 billion worldwide.

If a sixth Mission: Impossible movie does begin shooting next year, the studio will need to get a director attached to the project fairly soon. Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie isn’t expected to return, as each installment of the franchise has had a different director. (Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird directed the previous four installments.) One filmmaker that could be targeted is Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, who worked with Cruise previously on that sci-fi action film and will do so again in the upcoming thriller Mena.

Given the high profile of previous Mission: Impossible directors, Joss Whedon is also being mentioned as a possible filmmaker-of-interest for the studio.

Directed by McQuarrie from a script by Drew Pearce, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation hits theaters July 31.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1’s ending, explained
Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell turn around in a small car, looking concerned.

Nearly three years ago, director Christopher McQuarrie started filming Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, and it's been a long journey to get this sequel on the big screen. Franchise star Tom Cruise has been headlining the Mission: Impossible films since 1996 with increasingly risky stunts and over-the-top action that has kept audiences coming back for more. But Dead Reckoning Part 1 takes things to another level with a story that is too big for a single movie.

By most accounts, Dead Reckoning's two-movie adventure will mark the end of Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his time in the Impossible Mission Force. When the ending comes around for Part 1, Ethan's team has been forever changed, and even bigger challenges lie ahead in Part 2. If you need help making sense of it all, then you've come to the right place because we're about to dive in. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to keep reading, preferably after you've already seen Dead Reckoning Part 1.

In 1996, Tom Cruise starred in two movies. One of those movies, Jerry Maguire, earned the actor his second Oscar nomination. The other film was Mission: Impossible, a film that drastically changed the course of his career. As Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible elevated Cruise into a bonafide action star, as he started his transition from dramatic and comedic movies to more action and sci-fi films.

Thirty years later, the Mission: Impossible franchise remains one of the most consistent series in Hollywood. Mission: Impossible continues to raise the stakes with each entry as Cruise risks his life with each death-defying stunt, all in the name of entertainment. Before Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, we have a task for you to complete. Standing in Ethan's way is "The Entity," a mysterious organization that will push Ethan and his team to its limits.

Since Mission: Impossible debuted in 1996, the film series has been one of the premier action franchises in Hollywood.
