Smart door locks are meant to make your life a little easier, by letting you skip the whole fumbling-for-your-keys moment as you search through your giant messenger bag while holding coffee. August just added support for the Apple Watch, which means it’s even easier for owners of the wearable to get through the door.

Using the iOS app, you can see whether your door is locked or unlocked in the Glances menu and get notifications when someone opens the door. August replaces standard deadbolts and works by Bluetooth. When a trusted phone is in range, the lock opens. Owners can sends invites to guests using a smartphone app. If users want to control the lock remotely, they’ll need the $50 Wi-Fi hub.

The Watch app is a little superfluous at this point. It’s not like you need to whip out your phone when you’re approaching your lock now, and the Watch app works by making connecting via Bluetooth to your iPhone, which then makes a Bluetooth connection to the August. Still, if someone does manage to open your door, you’ll get that notification on your wrist, which might give you a bit of peace of mind.

The $250 smart lock is the first to offer this functionality; considering it’s been available in Apple stores since it first debuted last year, that’s not all that surprising. However, though August is working on becoming compatible with Apple’s HomeKit, it’s not quite there yet.

August joins other smart-home apps for the Apple Watch, including Honeywell, Withings, IFTTT, ecobee, Insteon, and SmartThings. That means you can now control your lights, thermostat, and locks, all from your wrist. It might not be enough to shell out hundreds of dollars for a watch, but if you do decide to get one, it could make your life a little more hands-free.

From security cameras and deadbolts to light bulbs and more, the past few years have seen an explosion of new smart home products. You’ve probably noticed Ring doorbells installed on your neighbors’ front porch when out for a walk -- and if you haven’t, you’re probably at least familiar with one of a dozen different viral videos captured by them.

Despite the boom in smart gadgets, there’s an absolute dearth of smart locks that double as doorbell cameras. The two products seem like a match made in heaven, letting you secure your home and monitor it at the same time, but few manufacturers have experimented with the format. However, there are a few good reasons as to why these smart lock + video doorbells are so scarce.

Schlage has a long history of making locks that fit people's lifestyles and the company's newest smart lock is no exception. Announced at CES 2022, the Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt is the first lock in North America to work with Apple's latest home keys capability in HomeKit.

The idea is simple: you can now store a virtual set of keys to the Schlage lock in your Apple Wallet and access it on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Best of all, you don't even need to unlock your phone or watch to open the deadbolt. Just tap the watch or phone on the lock. We could imagine this feature might come in handy if a friend is dropping you off at home and for some reason, you can't remember any of your codes. If your iPhone is out of juice, Schlage says you may be able to still open the lock for up to five more hours, thanks to Power Reserve.

Don’t toss out your old smart home tech! Regift it

Ho-ho-hold on to your old smart home tech. Don't throw it away -- it can make a great Christmas gift.

Whether you managed to find a great deal on some new smart speakers or you were gifted an upgrade on your smart light bulbs, it's very possible you'll find yourself with a few too many gadgets kicking around the house. Sure, you can stash the old ones away for a rainy day, but after gathering dust for so long, you'll likely need clear out them out eventually. Kicking these devices to the curb is an utter waste when they're still perfectly serviceable. Let's see if we can find a better home for your old smart home tech.
Prep
First things first, no matter where these gadgets are going, you'll want to make sure you've performed a factory reset on them. You don't want to have lingering user data on them when you hand them off. You'll also want to make sure you have all the appropriate power supplies and wiring needed to have the device up and running. Original packaging and documentation are nice, but not entirely necessary. So long as you've got a box with some protective padding inside, your smart home gadget should be ready to hand off.
