Sci-fi parody, and cult-favorite Galaxy Quest is getting the TV series treatment on Amazon. The streamer will partner with Paramount Television to adapt the 1999 feature for the small screen, according to EW.
The original DreamWorks film followed the cast members of a Star Trek-esque TV show who are forced to become “real life” space heroes when they end up on a spaceship with technology modeled after their. Plot details of the new adaptation aren’t yet available, but we’re sure it’ll follow this story in some capacity — maybe even tying in a few meta gags about the fact that it’s a TV show about the cast of a fake TV show?
As they did in the film nearly two decades ago, Dean Parisot will direct, Robert Gordon will write the script, and Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein will exec produce the new project. It’s unclear if the series will feature any of the same cast members as the film, which starred Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen, Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell, but including any of them would certainly sweeten the show’s appeal.
Regardless of who’s cast for the new series, it will surely attract Galaxy Quest fans, and Star Trek fans alike. The latter was certainly the production team’s plan when the movie hit theaters in ’99, even referencing the classic show in the name of the film’s spaceship (NTE 3120, was believed to be short for ‘Not the Enterprise,’ according to Mental Floss.) The strategy worked: the parody was named the seventh greatest Star Trek film ever by voters at the Star Trek 2013 conference.
The show is still in its early stages and reportedly hasn’t yet gotten the green light to make the series’ pilot. If it does, Galaxy Quest will join Amazon Prime Instant Video’s ever-growing list of upcoming original series, which already includes an automobile show from the former presenters of BBC’s Top Gear, the Bryan Cranston-produced crime drama Sneaky Pete, a Casanova reboot, WWII series The Man in the High Castle, and legal drama Trial, among others.
