Want a BB-8 Droid from the upcoming Star Wars? They go on sale tonight for $150

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of BB-8 ever since the adorable little droid made his debut on the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we’ve got good news for you — Disney has partnered up with Sphero to make the droid a reality, and it goes on sale tonight at midnight.

The droid, which is sure to be a hot-ticket item this holiday season, is pretty much everything we could’ve hoped for in a Star Wars toy. It’s not nearly as big as the full-size robotic version used on the Force Awakens set, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in pure awesomeness.

Save for its little magnetically-levitating head, BB-8’s hardware is almost exactly the same as a regular Sphero — a drivable RC ball that first debuted a few years ago. This sphere-shaped design uses an array of motors to spin its spherical casing around itself and drive around — sort of like a robotic, remote-controlled rat in a ball.

Like Sphero’s other toys, the BB-8 toy will connect to iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth — allowing users to drive the it around by simply tilting their phone or tablet. But Drive is just one of the three modes that BB-8 offers. The accompanying app will also sport a Holographic Messaging mode, which allows users create and view Star Wars style “holo-messages” inside the app. And of course, because this is Sphero we’re talking about, there’s also a Patrol mode that’s designed to teach kids about programming. This mode will display a real-time log of BB-8’s movements, based on data picked up by the gyroscope and accelerometer sensors in your device.

The toy is slated to go on sale for $150 starting tomorrow, and will be available both online and through a number of different brick-and-mortar retail locations. Be prepared to wait in line though — this is probably one of the most highly anticipated toys in history.

That said, if waiting in line isn’t your thing, you can always just build one yourself.

CES 2023: HD Hyundai’s Avikus is an A.I. for autonomous boat and marine navigation
Demonstration of NeuBoat level 2 autonomous navigation system at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

This content was produced in partnership with HD Hyundai.
Autonomous vehicle navigation technology is certainly nothing new and has been in the works for the better part of a decade at this point. But one of the most common forms we see and hear about is the type used to control steering in road-based vehicles. That's not the only place where technology can make a huge difference. Autonomous driving systems can offer incredible benefits to boats and marine vehicles, too, which is precisely why HD Hyundai has unveiled its Avikus AI technology -- for marine and watercraft vehicles.

More recently, HD Hyundai participated in the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, to demo its NeuBoat level 2 autonomous navigation system for recreational boats. The name mashes together the words "neuron" and "boat" and is quite fitting since the Avikus' A.I. navigation tech is a core component of the solution, it will handle self-recognition, real-time decisions, and controls when on the water. Of course, there are a lot of things happening behind the scenes with HD Hyundai's autonomous navigation solution, which we'll dive into below -- HD Hyundai will also be introducing more about the tech at CES 2023.

There's a scene in Mission Impossible 3 that you might recall. In it, our hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) tackles the movie's villain, holds him at gunpoint, and forces him to read a bizarre series of sentences aloud.

"The pleasure of Busby's company is what I most enjoy," he reluctantly reads. "He put a tack on Miss Yancy's chair, and she called him a horrible boy. At the end of the month, he was flinging two kittens across the width of the room ..."
