New Hermes, Product Red, and Apple bands coming soon for the Apple Watch

Apple has announced several new finishes for the Apple Watch, and a wide selection of new Watch bands. While the hardware remains unchanged, it has been given new colors and new bands, ready to customize the look even further. Here’s what we know so far.

Apple Watch Hermès ($1250 – $1500)

A new partnership was announced on stage in San Francisco: Fashion designer Hermès will be producing special bands for the Watch. Prices haven’t been announced, but they’re unlikely to be cheap, and they’ll be on sale in October through selected retailers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given its obvious suitability, Apple has launched a Product Red Apple Watch Sport band. Apple will donate a percentage of the Product Red profits to the fight against AIDS.

New Apple bands ($49 – $449)

Apple has launched an new selection of its own Watch Sport bands, in a variety of colors. These include a grey, brown, cream, and a sky blue hue, plus a pink, reworked black, and two shades of red. New leather bands with a two-tone finish will also go on sale.

New Apple Watch finishes ($349 – $399)

Apple’s not stopping with the bands either, it will introduce several new finishes for the Watch body. These include a gold and a rose gold finish for the Watch Sport — but neither will be actual gold, that’s still reserved for the Watch Edition. At least everyone can get the look, without needing a bank loan.

Prices aren’t going to change, and the new shades will be available for both the 38mm and 42mm body. They’ll be available when the Apple Store reopens later today.

The new Watch models and Watch straps have been announced at Apple’s September 9 event, and details are still coming through. We’ll update here once we know more, so keep checking back.

Apple Black Unity watch band worn on wrist with Mosaic face

It’s almost February, which, for most people, means pink and red hearts for Valentine’s Day. But there’s more to February than that — February is Black History Month. To commemorate the occasion, Apple released a brand new Black Unity band for the Apple Watch. In 2021, the Black Unity band was in the Sport Band style, while 2022’s version was the Braided Solo Loop. For 2023, Apple went with the Sport Loop style.

We got our hands on the new 2023 Black Unity Sport Loop band, and here’s a closer look at it.

The Apple Watch SE 2 ready to pair with a phone.

The Apple Watch is my favorite and most highly recommended smartwatch. If you’re just carefully unwrapping a new one from its clever, elongated packaging, congratulations!

I’ve been lucky enough to use and review every new Apple Watch since the very beginning, right up to the new Apple Watch Ultra, so I’ve had some experience in setting them up. This is what I do, and the settings I change, to make sure the Apple Watch is up and ready to go in double-quick time.

Why this new Apple Watch Ultra app made me want to go diving
The Apple Watch Ultra and Oceanic+ app.

The Apple Watch Ultra is an adventure smartwatch, with special features aimed at hikers, trekkers, outdoors enthusiasts, and divers. Apple collaborated with Huish Outdoors to create the newly released Oceanic+ app, which in combination with the sensors on the Apple Watch Ultra, turns it into a fully functioning, certified dive computer.

Before starting this article, I set out to take an in-depth look at the Oceanic+ app, and at the same time, compare its functionality and usefulness with the G-Shock GWF-D1000 Frogman dive watch — which also has a dive computer. It was by doing this that the Apple Watch Ultra, once again, surprised me. It did so because it encouraged me to do something new, and the Frogman has never quite managed the same thing. What do I mean? Let me explain.
What do they cost and what about certification?
