Capcom announced that it will release a digital version of its cult favorite 3D action game Mega Man Legends, bringing the rarely-seen classic to new audiences on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.
Fans have long requested a re-release for Mega Man Legends, citing its memorable storyline and cast of uniquely quirky characters. The port marks the first time Mega Man Legends will hit a new platform in North America since a PC version premiered in 2001.
Released in 1998 for the original PlayStation, Mega Man Legends was the first 3D entry in a series known for its side-scrolling action. Mega Man Legends tells a story in which a re-cast Mega Man investigates the ruins of a flooded Earth with his excavation crew. Rumors of hidden treasure draw the attention of the Bonne family of pirates and their army of clumsy Servbots, whom Mega Man encounters throughout.
A spinoff, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, hit the PlayStation alongside a direct sequel, Mega Man Legends 2, in 2000. While The Misadventures of Tron Bonne saw a PSN re-release earlier this year, the original Mega Man Legends remained a PSone exclusive, and disc copies fetched high prices on the secondary market.
The Mega Man Legends series remained popular among fans in the years after Mega Man Legends 2 ended its story with a cliffhanger, and publisher Capcom announced plans to revive the franchise in 2011 with Mega Man Legends 3 for the Nintendo 3DS. The project was subsequently canceled, leading to fan outcry and petitioning with no response from Capcom.
Earlier this year, Japanese development studio Comcept and Mega Man co-designer Keiji Inafune launched a Kickstarter campaign for Red Ash, a 3D action-adventure game that serves as a spiritual successor to Mega Man Legends. While the project failed to meet its funding goal, Chinese digital entertainment company FUZE stepped in to fund the game’s upcoming release for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Mega Man Legends will launch digitally via the PlayStation Network on September 29 for $10.
