The latest film to be targeted for a modern-day makeover is Joel Schumacher’s 1990 thriller Flatliners, with Inception and Juno actress Ellen Page reportedly in talks to star in the movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake of Flatliners will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev, the filmmaker responsible for the 2009 big-screen adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (starring Noomi Rapace) and the director of the pilot episode of USA’s critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, among other projects. The film will be based on a screenplay penned by Source Code writer Ben Ripley.
The original 1990 film cast Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon as medical students whose experiments with bringing subjects back from the brink of death begin to have dire ramifications for their outside lives. The film’s script was penned by Peter Filardi, who later wrote the screenplays for the 1996 film The Craft and the 2004 television movie based on Stephen King’s horror novel Salem’s Lot.
Flatliners was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing,” as well as a Saturn Award for the year’s best science-fiction film.
It’s unknown what role Page will play in the remake of Flatliners, as the original film was an ensemble project that explored the ways each of its main characters were affected by the experiments.
Page currently appears in the recently released drama Freeheld, and previously played the mutant Kitty Pryde in the X-Men franchise. Page also provided the voice and motion-capture performance for the lead character in the acclaimed 2013 video game Beyond: Two Souls.
