The Playlist is reporting that Sandra Bullock is set to star alongside ten other actresses in an all-female version of the 2001 classic Ocean’s Eleven … which of course was a remake of the 1960 classic of the same name.
Bullock, however, is not expected to play Danielle Ocean. The actress will have her own character and may even be visited by George Clooney’s Danny Ocean at some point during the film. The two have become close and recently worked together on Our Brand is Crisis, with Clooney producing and Bullock starring.
While we don’t know who will play the other 10 heisters yet, it looks like Hunger Games Director Gary Ross will be at the helm, with Olivia Milch (Queen & Country) penning the script.
The Ocean’s trilogy will doubtless be a tough act to follow, but 11 talented, charismatic women + a complicated, crazy-yet-clever caper + witty repartee sounds like a winning formula to us.
Sometimes we rail against the reboot/remake/re-imagining culture in Hollywood, but these female-led reworkings aren’t just slapping a fresh coat of paint on done and re-done franchises. Changing the genders of lead characters requires producers to rethink some of the fundamentals of these stories and to come at them from a fresh angle.
This particular project was reportedly initiated last year George Clooney, Ocean’s 11-13 Director Steven Soderbergh, and the late, great Producer Jerry Weintraub, and has been “gestating” since the fall of 2014. Big news remaining under wraps for an entire year? That may be a Hollywood record.
While Director Gary Ross is currently busy working with Matthew McConaughey on The Free State Of Jones, the Ocean’s reboot will likely be his next film. That said, this project has a few hurdles to clear before it begins shooting, so be sure to stay tuned.
