Blizzard’s Overwatch hits retail for PS4, Xbox One, and PCs in spring 2016

Blizzard’s competitive first-person shooter Overwatch is coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC platforms as part of an “Origins Edition” retail package launching in the spring of 2016, the publisher announced today.

Previously announced as a PC exclusive, Overwatch will now launch across multiple platforms as both a standalone game priced at $40 and in the bonus-bundled Origins Edition available for $60.

The Origins Edition of Overwatch includes exclusive character skins and in-game items for Diablo III, StarCraft II, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm. Both editions will grant players access to the game’s full roster of 21 characters.

Overwatch is a team-based, competitive multiplayer shooter featuring a wide variety of playable heroes and villains. Each character boasts their own unique abilities and loadouts, giving players a multitude of options when taking on opponents in arena combat.

In Overwatch, competitors assemble squads of up to six teammates each, with individual players serving in offensive, defensive, tank, and support roles. The game boasts an array of multiplayer modes, including the capture-the-flag-inspired Payload and the king-of-the-hill-styled Point Control.

Blizzard announced in October that it will begin beta testing for Overwatch in the coming months. A closed beta is currently operating on PC platforms, while a planned series of Beta Test Weekends will gauge server load among a wider playerbase.

The company notes that beta testing invitations will be sent out on an “extremely limited” basis to select players, who will be expected to provide detailed feedback during the event. Beta Test Weekends will be open to larger groups of players, but will feature limited content compared to the closed beta sessions.

A final release date for Overwatch has not been revealed, but Polygon reports that a retail launch will arrive before June 21, 2016. More details regarding Overwatch‘s upcoming release will be announced at the ongoing BlizzCon event in Anaheim, California.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns for Nintendo Switch canceled ahead of last-gen launch

Superhero strategy game Marvel's Midnight Suns is getting its long-delayed Xbox One and PS4 port on May 11, but there's some bad news for Nintendo Switch owners: The Switch version of the game has been canceled.
2K Games and Firaxis released Marvel's Midnight Suns, a card-based strategy game focusing on the supernatural side of the Marvel comic book universe, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S last December. While Digital Trends enjoyed the game, it underperformed financially and the game's director left Firaxis altogether following its release. Originally slated to launch alongside the current-gen versions of Midnight Suns in October 2022, the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game were indefinitely delayed when the game was pushed to December.

Now, the PS4 and Xbox One ports will finally come out digitally alongside the Blood Storm expansion on May 11, but 2K confirmed in the press release announcing the date that "the Nintendo Switch version of Marvel's Midnight Suns will no longer be offered as part of updated plans."
Additionally, the release calls Blood Storm the "final" DLC for Midnight Suns, so it seems unlikely that the game will continue to receive lots of post-launch support, unlike other Firaxis titles such as Sid Meier's Civilization VI and XCOM 2. That's certainly a more muted ending than one would expect from a Marvel game from the industry's premier strategy developers.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is unintentionally delightful

One does not simply walk into Mordor; instead, one might opt to climb up a wall of vines or jump from platform to platform. That’s the crux of what The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is all about.

The game positions the player as the classic Lord of the Rings villain, shining light on his previously unexplored backstory, which includes his capture and subsequent escape from the clutches of evil. It’s a novel concept that I wasn’t exactly sure would work before trying it out for myself. Given all that, I knew I needed to play The Lord of the Rings: Gollum at PAX East, and after going hands-on with it, I came away with mixed thoughts that lean positive, with more than a few caveats.

MLB The Show 23 returns to Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch this March

Sony San Diego Studios announced MLB The Show 23 today, and confirmed that it will launch across all major PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo systems on March 28.
No new platforms were added this year, so PC players aren't getting in on the fun. Still, this announcement makes it clear that MLB The Show is a multiplatform series across PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms for the foreseeable future. Xbox's version of the trailer also confirms that MLB The Show 23 will be on Xbox Game Pass at launch, making this first-party Sony series a day-one Game Pass title three years in a row.
MLB The Show 23 - Cover Athlete Reveal
As is typically the case with sports games, MLB The Show 23's reveal was primarily focused on its cover athlete. We learned that Jazz Chisholm Jr., a second baseman for the Miami Marlins, will grace the cover of the game. Like last year, the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game will cost $60, while players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S without Xbox Game Pass will need to pay $70. So far, no new gameplay features have been teased, although a blog post confirms that cross-platform multiplayer, saves, and progression across all versions of the game will return this year.
So far, there's not a lot that actually seems new about MLB The Show 23, but this reveal concludes the genesis of a new era for the long-running baseball series. MLB The Show 23 will be released for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on March 28.
