For budget-minded smartphone buyers, 2015 has already been an incredibly kind year. According to a report on VentureBeat, the year looks to get even sweeter for budget-minded folks with the Samsung Galaxy J3 and the LG K7.

Starting with the Samsung handset, it’s already available in China in the form of the weirdly-named Galaxy J3(6). The Galaxy J3 rumored to launch in the U.S. sometime next year should remain identical to its Chinese counterpart, with the handset sporting a 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 resolution AMOLED display.

Elsewhere, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and 1.5GB of RAM should keep things chugging along nicely enough, while the 2,600mAh battery should keep the lights on for a bit. You’ll find a 5-megapixel camera on the back, while selfie lovers will have to live with the 2-megapixel shooter on the front. Finally, the Galaxy J3 looks to sport 16GB of internal memory, double the storage found in its Chinese counterpart.

According to the report, AT&T and Sprint, as well as Cricket Wireless, Boost Mobile, and Virgin Mobile, will carry the Galaxy J3.

As for the LG K7, the budget-minded smartphone looks to pack a 5-inch, 854 x 480 resolution display. Taking a peek under the hood reportedly reveals a quad-core 1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor and 1.5GB of RAM powering the handset. On the storage front, the K7 only provides a measly 8GB of memory, with the report making no mention of possible expandable storage through a Micro SD card slot. Finally, the K7 is slated to include 5-megapixel cameras on the front and the back.

As for availability, the K7 will reportedly make its way to T-Mobile and “other U.S. carriers,” though we can assume that those other carriers likely include prepaid ones, given the K7’s budget status.

The Tab S7 FE 5G will be available starting August 5 for $669 directly from Samsung.com, AT&T, and Verizon. T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and other retailers will also get it in the following days. The 5G model will only come in Mystic Black, while the Wi-Fi version comes with various color options including black, silver, light green, and light pink.

LG’s smartphone departure allows OnePlus, Moto, and Nokia to win big in the U.S.
lg velvet review back edge

Several smartphone makers have capitalized on LG’s decision to no longer make smartphones, according to research into the U.S. phone market published by Counterpoint Research. It shows LG’s presence in the U.S. over the past year decreasing by 35%, giving OnePlus in particular the chance to massively increase its business.

Counterpoint Research notes that demand for affordable 5G smartphones and the ongoing component shortage has made it a difficult year for manufacturers, but four companies -- OnePlus, Motorola, Apple, and HMD Global -- have managed to turn these challenges into positives.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 is adding an S Pen, replacing this year’s Galaxy Note
Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Note 20 S Pen.

Samsung's Unpacked event on August 11 is going to be a doozy. President of Mobile Communications, TM Roh, just dropped a ton of new information about what we can expect from the announcement. In news that will shock precisely nobody, he confirmed that Samsung will unveil new foldables at the event -- but it's the details that have us intrigued.

Roh first makes it clear that this next generation, expected to be the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, will be "armed with more durable, stronger materials." That's critical to the widespread adoption of foldables, which have made strides but are still inarguably more fragile than non-folding phones. But that strength matters in a very specific area for Samsung: It will be announcing a new S Pen specifically for foldables. It'll likely be different from the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra's, which could damage current foldable display coverings unless Samsung also unveils dramatically stronger "Ultra Thin Glass." The question is whether this will also lead to shortcomings in features like pressure sensitivity, tracking, and accuracy.
