AMC drops graphic new Walking Dead teaser for the back half of season 6

Any self-respecting TV fanatic knows what he or she will be doing on the eve of February 14, 2016, and it won’t be staring longingly into his significant other’s eyes over a romantic dinner. Rather, it will be cuddling up in front of the TV to catch the midseason premiere of the sixth season of The Walking Dead. And to help whet your loving appetites, AMC has just released a premiere teaser.

It’s less than half a minute long, but points to plenty of turmoil to come for the group of survivors still trying to, well, survive amongst a sea of walking dead, not to mention human threats. And if the trailer is any indication, it’s the latter that will pose the biggest problems for Rick and crew going into the back half of this season.

The trailer begins with Rick’s ever haunting voice noting that he “thought living behind these walls was possible,” but admitting he was wrong. He was, of course, referring to (spoiler alert) the physical walls of the town of Alexandria that we saw at the end of the first half of the season no longer provide the much-needed barrier between the group and the hungry walkers. But was he also speaking metaphorically, about the walls the town may have tried to build around the truth of what life really has become?

Perhaps the most striking image is that of Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan) screaming “no!” passionately as she looks on at what is undoubtedly some kind of horrific scene. Could this finally be the real end to Glenn (Steven Yuen), her husband and (again, spoiler alert) father of her bun in the oven? The tagline spread across the screen throughout the 29-second clip tells the new world “comes with a price,” which also has us wondering: how big will that price be this season?

Readers of the comics will undoubtedly be reeling with speculation when they see the final scene that depicts Rick bringing down a hatchet with all his might. Who (or what body part of whom) might this hatchet have just chopped? We’ll have to wait to find out.

We also see a replay of some of the teaser scenes that aired at the end of season six’s first half, finally introducing the existence of the Negan character, who will be played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. And, of course, there’s the obligatory Daryl (Norman Reedus) shot of which no trailer can do without.

One thing’s for sure: for any fan of the series, the chocolates and wine will be served up with a dish of walker blood and guts this Valentine’s Day.

Ratings for The Walking Dead aren't what they used to be, but that isn't stopping AMC from launching a third series set in the world of the hit zombie survival drama.

The still-untitled series will follow two female protagonists as they attempt to live in a world filled with threats -- both human and zombie -- around every corner, and will unfold in the same universe as the network's two existing series, The Walking Dead and and Fear the Walking Dead. AMC released a set of six photos from the series ahead of its panel event at New York Comic-Con on Saturday, October 5.
