Sprint extends 50 percent mobile promotion for T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon customers

Sprint has announced an extension to its half-price promotion, which cuts the rate of standard plans from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in half and pays the switching fees for customers of up to $650 per line.

The carrier extended the promotion after an “overwhelming response” from customers, with Black Friday setting a record for most sales in a single day at Sprint.

“The response to 50 percent off has been outstanding,” said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure. “After receiving such positive feedback from customers and hearing from our salespeople about store traffic, I knew we had to extend this exciting promotion.”

Customers will be able to switch carriers and cut their plan by 50 percent until February 11. There are a few caveats, though: The deal applies to standard plans only, and you’re charged with a $36 activation fee when you switch.

Sprint accepts most standard plans on Verizon and AT&T, from 300MB to 50GB; for T-Mobile, all Simple Choice plans are accepted. MetroPCS and Cricket Wireless customers can also use the promotion, provided their mobile plan matches a plan available on T-Mobile or AT&T, the parent companies of MetroPCS and Cricket.

Sprint has various plans for customers that want a new smartphone, including Sprint Lease, iPhone Forever, and an installment plan. Customers are also able to add their own smartphone, provided it works with Sprint’s network.

The 50 percent plan is an aggressive move by Sprint to win customers — so aggressive that T-Mobile CEO John Legere bashed it on Twitter. We don’t know how much money Sprint is making off this promotion, if any, which is a worry since the company announced layoffs a few months ago. Sprint will also not participate in the spectrum auction in March this year, due to financial difficulties.

Both Sprint and T-Mobile have made promises about when their customers in the U.S. would start seeing 5G coverage. In spring 2018, when the two telecommunications heavyweights first announced they would be merging, their CEOs wrote a joint “open letter to consumers” promising “5G for all." Almost two years later, with the long-foreshadowed Sprint-T-Mobile merger now legally approved, it looks like it could actually happen, experts say -- but those in underserved non-urban areas may have to keep waiting.

“This merger is very beneficial for T-Mobile, but it’s also beneficial for the U.S., and where we currently are in the global race to 5G,” said Steve Vachon, an analyst at Technology Business Research. “Now, the 5G plan is much more likely to go forward.”

Report: Judge to rule in favor of Sprint/T-Mobile merger

It looks like the Sprint-T-Mobile merger is about to clear the last of any potential legal hurdles. According to a new report from the New York Times, the judge presiding over the case between the two companies and a coalition of state's attorneys is expected to rule in favor of Sprint and T-Mobile.

The suit was first filed in June by a group of attorney generals from 13 states and the District of Columbia. It first arose after federal regulators, including the Department of Justice, gave the deal the go-ahead. Once the deal goes through, the third and fourth-largest carriers will combine to form the "New T-Mobile." The new company will reportedly have more than 100 million customers.

Sprint will pull the plug on Virgin Mobile next month

Sprint-owned Virgin Mobile is shutting down beginning next month. Customers who have the prepaid service will be transferred over to Boost Mobile, which Sprint also owns. 

Fierce Wireless first reported the announcement. The news of the service’s shutdown comes as Sprint and T-Mobile are on the brink of a merger.
