How to use Netflix’s secret category codes to find what you want to watch

With an ever-growing library of content, there’s plenty to watch on Netflix — as long as you can find something that interests you. We’ve all experienced the problem of content overload, when you have an idea of what you want to watch but you just can’t quite narrow it down with so many options available. The streaming service conveniently allows users to search by general categories, but if you want to get even more specific, there’s a trick to help you out.

Each genre and subgenre has its own assigned code, making navigation a breeze. According to What’s On Netflix, you can manually access a full list of movies or programs for each genre or subgenre. You don’t have to scroll through predefined carousels on your homepage anymore. You can go directly to the genre categories that interest you the most.

To access the library of codes, type http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/INSERTNUMBER into your preferred browser. You’ll need to substitute your genre code in place of the “INSTANTNUMBER” portion of the URL. At that point, you’ll be directed immediately to the genre you’d like to browse and see all of the options Netflix has available in that category.

There are codes for more general, overarching genres, like anime, drama, and TV series. However, you can also browse through several specific subcategories, for example, movies for ages 5 to 7, teen comedies, or werewolf horror movies. This tool can direct you to the particular kind of content you like to watch, instead of having to wade through Netflix’s sea of content. Once you’re directed to your genre category, you can navigate it just as you would Netflix’s familiar interface.

If you’re a Google Chrome user, you can effortlessly search lesser-known genres after installing the FindFlix extension. With this program, you won’t need to manually log URLs and codes to find what you’re looking for. If you’re not a Chrome user, check out our list below for our favorite “secret” Netflix codes. You can simply click through these hyperlinks for direct browsing.

The cast of The Nest.

In part because its goal is to have something for everyone, few streaming services are more awash with movies of all kinds than Netflix this fall season. While checking out all the available titles on the streaming service, you might find yourself suffering from crippling indecision about which ones you should prioritize and which ones to avoid.

If you just want one movie that you should definitely make time for, then we've selected just the movie for you. The Nest was released in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, and as a result, it flew under the radar. It tells the story of a crumbling marriage that is falling apart largely because the father in the family is in serious debt. Here are three reasons you should check it out in October.

October is a big month for TV. One of the most popular shows on Netflix, Outer Banks, returns for its fourth season, which will be split into two parts. Speaking of returning shows, Heartstopper season 3 and The Diplomat season 2 are back in October. Additionally, the NBA will introduce a new 10-part docuseries, Starting 5, which chronicles the 2023-2024 season.

Enough about television; let's focus on movies -- not the top titles, but the ones that can get lost within the Netflix vault. Below are five movies that will not be on this week's most popular list. However, they all might be considered underrated, depending on your preference. Our picks include a dystopian thriller, a teen romance, and a raunchy animated comedy.

The Tubi app icon on Apple TV.

These days, when it comes to streaming services, you have your pick of options. Plenty of these come with a hefty price tag, and the major streamers regularly announce price hikes. However, consumers are feeling stretched thin and looking for ways to watch TV without breaking their budget in the process. That's where advertising video on demand (AVOD) and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) services come in. Options like Tubi, Pluto, the Roku Channel, and, more recently, Google TV are there to fill in the gap.

Tubi is one of the big players in this space, as an AVOD/FAST (we'll refer to it as just free streaming going forward) service with more than 200,000 movies and TV shows and over 200 live TV channels -- for free.
