Kickstarter finally has an Android app

Kickstarter has finally gotten around to rolling out an Android app for its site, three years after its iOS version launched. It’s not clear why it’s taken so long, but Android users heavily into crowdfunding will surely be pleased to have an easier way to explore and interact with the site. Well, perhaps.

You see, the app is pretty basic compared to the iPhone version, letting funders – or potential funders – do little more than search the site’s database of weird and wonderful projects, as well as track those they’ve already backed.kickstarter app android No, unlike its iOS counterpart, there’s nothing here for creators, so in other words, no opportunity to add content like updates to a project page.

More functionality is expected somewhere down the road, though hopefully we won’t have to wait three years for it. Promisingly, Kickstarter’s Brooklyn-based team says in a post introducing the app that it’s “just” version 1.0, telling fans to “stay tuned for more features — like tools allowing creators to manage their projects.”

The company explains that with this initial version it wanted to create a “great discovery experience for backers [that makes it] easy to dive into thousands of live creative projects from every corner of the Kickstarter universe.” In that respect, it’s hit the mark.

Project searches can be refined via categories, making it easier to hunt down the kind of campaigns that interest you most. Tracking is offered via the app’s Activity Feed, which shows the latest updates from creators you’ve supported, and also spotlights campaigns your buddies have recently backed. Kickstarter describes the feed as “a play-by-play of all the news that should be on your radar.”

If you’re a Kickstarter fan with an Android device, you can grab the free app from the Google Play Store here.

3 reasons I’m disappointed by the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with its main display open.

During its Galaxy Unpacked July 2023 event, Samsung dropped a bunch of new products for everyone — from next-generation foldable phones to new wearables and a diverse range of tablets. One of the new device reveals was the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which has been expected along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Though I’m still fairly new to the scene of foldables, I have seen the appeal — and in some cases, I prefer the form factor over the standard glass slab that most phones are nowadays. But honestly, there isn’t a lot with the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 that’s drawing me in. Instead, it’s a bit underwhelming.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 price: here’s exactly how much it costs
Calender widget on the cover screen on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Samsung just held its latest Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea, and it had a whole slew of new products to unveil to the masses. We have three new Galaxy Tab S9 tablets, the Galaxy Watch 6 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is sure to impress with an all-new 3.4-inch cover display that Samsung has called the "Flex Window." You can access some new widgets from the Flex Window, including a multi-widget view for more at once, and even run apps on the cover display (with some caveats). The Z Flip 5 also has a new Flex Hinge that looks aesthetically pleasing and provides a solid foldable experience. The cameras are also slightly better, with a new lens coating that should cut down on unwanted lens flares.
