Superhot, the action-movie-simulating first-person shooter you forgot about until you saw the above screenshot, will be coming to PC February 25, according to Game Informer. The game will be released on Xbox One “shortly after.” Prior to the report, the Superhot team said the game would be released on those four platforms in the first quarter of 2016.
For those of us who don’t remember — or haven’t seen it — Superhot is a puzzle game masquerading as a FPS. The game technically handles like the many shooters you’ve seen before, except for one critical design tweak: time only moves forward when the player does. As a result, the game asks players to stop and plot their path through intense gun battles, rather than rely on quick trigger fingers.
Born out of a prototype made during a week-long game jam, the development team raised more than $250,000 through their June 2014 Kickstarter campaign. In its post-prototype heyday, the game received heaps of critical acclaim from critics and fellow game developers, including Vlambeer’s Rami Ismael and former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski, who donated to the Kickstarter and designed a level for the game.
As the report pointed out, there’s (hopefully) more Superhot on the horizon. The developer showed off a virtual reality prototype for the game on the Oculus Rift at E3 2014. There hasn’t been any official word on whether or not the game has a future on virtual reality platforms, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen eventually.
In the meantime, you can still play the original game jam prototype of Superhot for free online. If you like the idea, you can pre-order the PC version on the game’s website.
