After watching a hilarious sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live called Plizzanet Earth, which featured rapper Snoop Dogg narrating clips from Planet Earth with no prior knowledge of what various animals were, a fan named Kelly Ooton started a change.org petition for the real thing. Over 50,000 people have signed the proposal so far, with legions of signatures still flooding in daily.
“Snoop Dogg has narrated some Planet Earth in the past but yo we need him to narrate full episodes. Sign the petition if you agree,” Ooten wrote on the petition, which launched two weeks ago.
Snoop himself expressed his desire to return to the show once he heard about the petition, tweeting, “who made this ?? lets get this shit going . who want more #Plizzanet Earth ?!”
A big part of the rappers long-lived success has been based on his overt desire to please his fans. Just last week, he appeared in Flint, Michigan to help bring awareness to the city’s current water crisis, wearing a T Shirt which read, ‘Flint Lives Matter.’
A BBC-produced mini-series which came out in 2006, Planet Earth was released to widespread critical acclaim, and remains one of the best-loved nature documentary series of all time. The original show was narrated by famed British broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough, while Sigourney Weaver narrated the American version.
But Ooten and the legions of fans who have voiced their support for a Snoop Dawg-narrated Planet Earth don’t seem to have their sights set on the BBC show specifically. They have also reached out to Animal Planet and The Discovery Channel about Snoop narrating a TV show on either of the networks.
Who knows, what seems like an outlandish idea could actually bring big viewership to an outdoor documentary, especially with Snoop’s hilarious brand of witty commentary — as evidenced in his Kimmel clips.
At the time of this article’s publication, the petition has close to 54,000 signatures.
