Villain unveiled? Batman v Superman international spot gives new hints

The opening of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is less than two weeks away, so moviegoers won’t have to wait long to find out what happens when the two iconic superheroes share the screen. Fans who don’t want to wait, however, got a new hint today about what is to come, thanks to a new international spot. The trailer contains new footage and possibly confirms a rumor about a potential villain.

After building up the conflict between the “Son of Krypton” and the “Bat of Gotham,” the preview weaves in scenes that hadn’t been featured before. As Variety points out, Batman (played by Ben Affleck) is shown approaching a desert fortress, and it could very well be Apokolips, the home of DC Comics supervillain Darkseid. The character has been rumored to make an appearance in the film, which makes this footage seem telling.

Later, we see a newspaper clipping in the hands of Bruce Wayne, and it is an article about the destruction of Wayne Tower and the dozens who were killed there. The ominous words “You Let Your Family Die” are scrawled on the clipping in red. Needless to say, the off-duty Batman does not look pleased.

The new footage also features Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot); we get a quick look at her in black leather striding down a hallway. More familiar faces fill the rest of the spot, including co-stars Superman (Henry Cavill), Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), and Lois Lane (Amy Adams).

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film is framed as a match-up between Batman and Superman after the latter wreaked havoc on Metropolis. However, the synopsis warns that “another threat endangers humanity,” so we will have to wait and see how Darkseid or other villains come into play.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens in theaters on March 25.

Here’s why Clayface should be the main villain in The Batman Part II
Xermanico's cover art for One Bad Day: Clayface featuring the villain holding a clay figure of Batman.

While acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House) brushed aside Deadline's report of him helming a solo Clayface movie on Twitter, that same piece also slipped in that the villain might play a significant role in Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II. That news comes across as exciting and curious, as Reeves typically has a passion for presenting fantastical elements through a more realistic lens.

And since the most famous renditions of the classic supervillain are essentially colossal mud monsters, that might be tough to pull off with the current iteration of the Dark Knight. Reeves and Robert Pattinson's take on Batman and his budding cinematic universe are steeped in gritty crime-noir, but Clayface's inherently tragic origins and presence he brings shouldn't disqualify him either. Basil Karlo's acting background and Phantom of the Opera influences could easily make him a foreboding presence in The Batman Part II without feeling out of place.

Most popular DCEU movies, ranked by box-office gross
Justice League character shot.

Beginning with 2013's Man of Steel, the DC Extended Universe has had a tumultuous 10-year run. While some of its films were tremendous success stories, some didn't fare so well, and others have gone down as some of the worst superhero movies ever made.

All this has given the franchise a mixed reputation and has made some audiences eager to see how James Gunn will reboot everything with his new DC Universe. As the DCEU nears its end, now is a good time to rank the most popular movies in this cinematic universe in terms of box-office gross.
