The trouble won’t come all at once, it sounds like. “Daredevil is functioning fantastically … in Hell’s Kitchen,” said Cox of the vigilante. “He’s just able to enjoy the work that he is doing.”
Good and evil won’t be so easy to separate, though, based on comments from executive producer and co-show runner Doug Petrie. There will be more of a gray area this season, and Murdock will continue to be entrenched in it.
“What I love about Matt is that he’s like a walking contradiction,” said Cox. “In some senses, he’s playing god. He’s messing with other people’s destiny.”
Doing so may have dangerous ramifications. As we’ve seen in trailers and teasers over recent weeks, there’s a fine line between fighting darkness and becoming it. Multiple previews have contrasted the ruthless Punisher with Daredevil (Murdock’s alter ego), showing how the two aren’t all that different, for all that the latter tries to take a more moral approach to shutting down villains. “You know you’re one bad day away from being me,” his rival (played by Jon Bernthal) tells him at one point.
The season is shaping up to be eventful, given how Murdock deals with the consequences of his actions. “Matt Murdock has really provoked Hell’s Kitchen,” said Petrie. “This guy stirred the pot.”
Along with Daredevil and The Punisher, Daredevil will star Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Scott Glenn as Stick, and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple. Elodie Yung joins as the assassin Elektra.
Daredevil season 2 arrives on Netflix on March 18.
