The whole Deadpool crew will be back for the sequel

It isn’t often that a movie’s entire creative team sticks around for the sequel, but that’s exactly what’s happening with Deadpool and the follow-up to one of this year’s most successful, franchise-launching films.

20th Century Fox has announced that Deadpool director Tim Miller, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and star Ryan Reynolds will all return for the R-rated comic-book movie’s sequel, which has yet to receive an official release date on the studio’s calendar. With all of the pieces falling into place, though, fans can probably expect to know more about the sequel’s timeline in the very near future.

The studio made the announcement during its presentation at this year’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, which has already been host to quite a few big announcements on high-profile projects. Earlier this week, Sony Pictures revealed the official title and logo for Spider-Man: Homecoming at CinemaCon, while Universal Pictures announced that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch would voice The Grinch in an upcoming animated remake of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Already this year’s highest-grossing movie domestically, Deadpool currently holds the record for the most successful opening weekend of all time for an R-rated movie, and is rapidly closing in on becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide. The film is also the highest-grossing film in the X-Men franchise to date.

Although Reynolds is confirmed to return for the sequel, little else is known about the studio’s plans for the follow-up installment. However, a post-credits scene in the film suggested that the sequel will introduce Deadpool’s occasionally ally and enemy in the Marvel Comics universe — the bionic, time-traveling Cable — to the character’s cinematic world.

Although Deadpool is still going strong in theaters, the film arrives on DVD and Blu-ray next month, hitting shelves May 10.

Disney+ to add R-rated Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan on July 22
Deadpool crosses his arms as he's about to jump out of the back of an airplane.

Disney+ announced Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan will all stream on Disney+ in the U.S. starting July 22. This marks another shift for the streaming service as it slowly allows more R-rated and TV-MA content. Because of the violence and graphic nature, Disney reminds subscribers to revisit their parental control settings to curate their viewing experience.

The move comes at the same time as San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios will return for the first time in three years. Marvel President Kevin Feige will host a mega-panel in Hall H at 5 p.m. PT on Saturday, July 23. In years past, Marvel has used this panel to announce and showcase important projects like The Avengers. Many insiders speculate that Feige will give updates and share footage on upcoming MCU projects such as She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Blade.

Chris Hemsworth stares through a large glass window in a scene from Spiderhead.

The Netflix film Spiderhead is one of the more intriguing original films to premiere on the streaming service lately, with a high-profile creative team behind the camera and plenty of familiar faces in front of it.

The film casts Marvel Studios star Chris Hemsworth as the warden of a futuristic penitentiary where the inmates have volunteered to be test subjects in experiments with emotion-manipulating drugs in exchange for the ability to roam free in the facility. Based on George Saunders' short story Escape From Spiderhead, the film is directed by Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski from a script penned by Deadpool and Zombieland franchise writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
