If you thought huge, you’d be right — at least that’s what analysts anticipate. With 10 days to go until Thursday previews, Civil War is estimated to bring in upwards of $190 million in the U.S., according to a Deadline report. That would make for a more than healthy debut, even though it could place it behind fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s respective $207.44 million and $191.27 million domestic openings (per Box Office Mojo data). In fact, $190 million would be enough to seal the No. 5 spot on the list of biggest U.S. opening weekends of all-time, placing it behind Age of Ultron and ahead of Iron Man 3.
The high-profile movie’s success should extend overseas as well. Industry sources predict that Civil War‘s international opening could range between $200 million to $230 million, possibly reaching as high as $250 million, according to another Deadline report. It needs to top $216 million overseas to crack the list of the 10 all-time highest-grossing foreign openings.
With its all-star lineup of superheroes, including the new Spider-Man, of course fans are eager to watch Civil War. It helps, too, that critics have had plenty of positive things to say, earning the film a 97 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of publishing). That has likely played a part in advance ticket sales, which have been even more impressive than all of the movie’s Marvel predecessors, according to Fandango. Men in particular have been buying early, with Movio highlighting that they account for some 73 percent of advance ticket sales.
Captain America: Civil War opens stateside on May 6.
