While doing the usual press circuit for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, Downey was apparently asked if he had another solo movie left in him. And his answer seemed to infer that he was more than open to the possibility.
“I feel like I could do one more,” Downey told ABC News while promoting Civil War.
Downey’s comments about the possibility of another Iron Man movie were included as part of a behind-the-scenes feature on Civil War that included interviews with the cast and creative team on the film, as well as some new footage from the May 6 release. (He speaks about the potential for another solo feature around the 3:56 mark in the segment.)
While the upcoming film will be Downey’s seventh appearance as Iron Man and his industrialist alter ego, Tony Stark, in Marvel’s live-action movies, this isn’t the first time the Academy Award nominee has hinted at the possibility of a fourth Iron Man movie.
Back in 2014, Downey teased that he’d be playing Iron Man in films well after his solo franchise seemingly ended with the previous year’s Iron Man 3. Initial reports framed this as confirmation of more Iron Man movies, but the actor clarified his comments, indicating that he was talking about upcoming films Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, as well as future Marvel movies.
At this point, the continuing success of Marvel’s cinematic universe suggests that anything is possible for Iron Man and the rest of the studio’s superheroes, but anyone hopeful for more Iron Man movies should certainly feel good about Downey’s comments. Although nothing is certain about Iron Man 4, the actor can next be seen as the armored Avenger in Captain America: Civil War — which appears to feature just as much of Iron Man as it does of that series’ star-spangled superhero.
