Side bezels? The Ulefone Future doesn’t know the meaning of those words

Ulefone may not be a brand that’s well-known in the West, but the company hopes to turn some heads with its latest smartphone, the Future.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Future is the lack of any side bezels, enhancing the “infinity pool” effect the 5.5-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display with curved edges exudes. Representing one of the Future’s calling cards, that curved display meets the chamfered edges and unibody aluminum titanium alloy body, with the rear bearing a striking resemblance to a certain Apple-branded smartphone. That’s far from a knock against the Future, though, with the total package admittedly looking rather striking.

However, Ulefone made sure to pack as much function as form in the Future, with the handset powered by an octa-core 2GHz MediaTek Helio P10 chipset and a generous 4GB of RAM. Coupled with stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the Future should, in theory, ensure a smooth experience navigating throughout the operating system. The 3,000mAh battery promises to make that experience an all-day affair, while the USB Type-C port and side-mounted fingerprint sensor helps the Future stay true to its name. Oddly enough, the fingerprint sensor seems to be placed below the power button, which itself is below the volume rocker, so that right side of the phone certainly looks busy.

Elsewhere, the 16-megapixel rear camera with an F2.0 aperture lens promises accurate color representation when taking pictures, even when taking them in the dark, thanks to it being a Samsung ISOCELL sensor. The front-facing 5MP camera, meanwhile, seems to be a more vanilla experience, though images should be plenty sharp enough for your selfie needs.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Future’s rock-bottom price tag of $200. That’s an impressive price point to hit, when you consider the kind of hardware the Future packs. Keep in mind, however, that the $200 price tag will only stick around through May 4, after which the price goes up to $240. On May 25, the Future will go for its regular $270 price point, plus shipping and import fees you might have to pay if you’re interested.

When you buy a new Galaxy S21 and open the box, you'll find a phone and a USB-C cable. That's it. After previously removing the included wired headset from its phones, Samsung is now dropping the wall charger from its in-box accessory set.

Just like when Apple made the move with the iPhone 12, the reasoning is simple to understand. Samsung saves money on every phone it ships without a charger, and can pass on some percentage of that savings to the customer — after all, the lineup did get cheaper this year.

There’s always an assumption that phones designed to take a substantial beating will be ugly. We generally think tough phones should be like a pair of walking boots, ready to wade through mud, and then be hosed off and thrown in a corner until they’re needed again. The Cat S62 Pro proves rugged phones don’t have to be hideous, and that having a decent design doesn’t mean skimping on the features that matter either, as it manages to hide an impressive thermal camera on the back.
Design and screen
Good design matters, even when looking slick isn’t that important to the phone itself. After all, if the Cat S62 Pro is underwater or tumbling down a rock face, the fact it looks good at the time is largely irrelevant. Where it matters is when you're holding the phone. The Cat S62 Pro weighs 248 grams, but it hides this substantial weight quite well, remaining balanced in your hand. The large, smooth, curved sides fit snugly when being held, and although it's quite a wide phone, the buttons are all easy to locate and press.

The 11.9mm thick body is made of aluminum and plastic, and is equivalent in size to the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE or OnePlus 8T. Ergonomically, it's good, but it's hard to use the touchscreen with one hand due to the overall thickness. I love the security screws that dot the side of the frame, the oversize buttons and their texture, and the grippy rubberized panel on the back to stop it from slipping around. You can drop it from a height of 1.8 meters, dunk it in water, and assault it with sand, salt, and vibration, and it won’t fail thanks to the IP68 and IP69 rating and MIL-SPEC-810G body.
