‘Dope’ director Rick Famuyiwa catches ‘The Flash’

When filmmaker Seth Grahame-Smith made an abrupt exit from the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero movie The Flash last month, it was widely expected that we’d see a new director named in the near future in order to keep development moving along.

That’s exactly what happened this week, with Dope writer and director Rick Famuyiwa now reportedly attached to the film.

Despite a relatively small résumé at this point, Famuyiwa is a filmmaker on the rise in Hollywood, having earned quite a bit of positive buzz for his 2015 film about a geeky teenager growing up in a crime-ridden Los Angeles neighborhood. According to Deadline, which initially reported Famuyiwa’s attachment to The Flash, he’s also receiving considerable Emmy Award attention for directing Confirmation, the recent HBO drama chronicling Anita Hill’s sexual harassment allegations against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas during his 1991 confirmation hearings.

Currently set to star We Need to Talk About Kevin actor Ezra Miller, The Flash is intended to kick off a big-screen franchise based on DC Comics’ speedster superhero, who is already the subject of a wildly popular television series on The CW. The character is played by actor Grant Gustin on the series, but WB and its superhero franchise producer Zack Snyder have indicated that the television series and movie won’t exist in the same universe the way Marvel Studios’ movies and television series do, despite the success of the series.

Miller made his debut as The Flash in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and is expected to appear next in 2017’s Justice League Part One before going solo in The Flash a year later. Grahame-Smith penned the most recent script for The Flash, based on an original treatment by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The Flash is currently scheduled to hit theaters March 16, 2018.

For better or worse, The Flash doesn’t hold back. Throughout its 144-minute runtime, the superhero blockbuster tosses out more alternate universes, cameos, character variants, and shoddy visual effects than audiences will be able to see coming. The Andy Muschietti-directed film fits so much into its core story, in fact, that there isn’t much left for it to do by the time it's reached its end credits.

That doesn’t mean The Flash doesn’t pack any extra surprises into its credits, though. Heading into the film’s long-awaited opening weekend, here’s what DCEU fans should know about The Flash -- namely, whether or not it has any post-credits scenes that they should stay in the theater to see.

The Flash starring Ezra Miller is a massive superhero adventure that serves as a finale to the troubled DC Extended Universe series of films that began with Man of Steel. In keeping with the current trend in comic book movies, it’s a multiversal mash-up in which the Scarlet Speedster teams up with a version of himself from an alternate timeline while encountering an assortment of characters from both within and outside of the DCEU.
Oddly enough, someone could easily populate a robust Flash multiverse consisting only of versions of this movie that were never made. The Flash was in development hell for ages, with a plethora of totally distinct commissioned scripts and a parade of directors attached before the final Andy Muschietti version was produced. Instead of seeing The Flash, watch The Incredible Hulk on Disney+ instead

This is a good weekend for superhero movie fans. The Flash is now in theaters, and you can watch DC try to catch up to the multiverse hijinks of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Or instead of seeing The Flash, you can watch The Incredible Hulk on Disney+.

One of those films stars an occasional outlaw, and the other features Ed Norton as Bruce Banner, a fugitive who is on the run from the U.S. military, which wants to turn Banner's alter ego, the Hulk, into a weapon. This is also a big deal because The Incredible Hulk is poised to have a big influence on the upcoming MCU movies.
