'Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age' remasters a PS2-era classic

A remastered and upgraded version of the PlayStation 2-era RPG Final Fantasy XII will launch for the PlayStation 4 worldwide in 2017, publisher Square Enix announced today.

The upcoming re-release, titled Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, will feature visual enhancements in addition to a gameplay-expanding “Zodiac Job System” that was previously seen only in Japan.

Originally released in 2006, Final Fantasy XII was the last PlayStation 2 entry in Square Enix’s flagship RPG series, following up on Final Fantasy X, X-2, and a port of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. Final Fantasy XII shifted the series’ traditional turn-based gameplay in a new direction, allowing players to set up automated actions for their teammates in battle, among other innovations.

2007’s Japan-exclusive reissue Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System expanded on these unique combat mechanics, giving players access to twelve different License Boards and new tactical options. Other improvements featured in International Zodiac Job System include controllable guest party members, an option to double the game’s speed, and a “Trial Mode” that challenges expert players with a series of 100 consecutive battles.

Square Enix notes that all of the additions featured in International Zodiac Job System will make the jump to the PlayStation 4 for The Zodiac Age.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age follows up on a number of reissued Final Fantasy games from Square Enix in recent months, including Steam PC ports for the PSone series entries Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX. Remastered versions of Final Fantasy X and X-2 are also available for the PlayStation 4, PS3, PS Vita, and PCs.

Along with improvements ported over from International Zodiac Job System, the upcoming The Zodiac Age will also feature remastered audio, an autosave function, and trophy support. A release date for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is not yet known.

Final Fantasy XVI is finally on its way after a prolonged gap between it and the previous numbered entry. While numerous major titles have seen delays in the past couple of years, we're glad to finally know the game is nearly upon us. Final Fantasy XVI’s first 3 hours play like a high fantasy Last of Us

When I demoed Final Fantasy XVI back in February, I had some questions. The slice I played was very much focused on the upcoming PS5 release’s combat system. I was immediately impressed with how fast and furious it was, bringing a bit of Devil May Cry to the RPG series. That said, there was quite a bit I didn’t see. The story mission I played would only give me a brief introduction to its hero, Clive Rosfield, and the war-torn nation in which the game takes place. I was itching to know more.

I’d get all those lingering questions answered when I went hands-on with the first three hours of the game, which launches on June 22. Rather than letting me test out an arsenal of spells, I’d start with a much less capable Clive with only a few attacks to his name. I’d get to see his full tragic backstory play out through long cinematics with only a few smaller gameplay snippets between. I’d leave my demo session with far fewer question marks, a bit more intrigue, and a couple of lingering concerns that could be alleviated later in the adventure.

When is the Final Fantasy XVI State of Play?
This Final Fantasy XVI-focused State of Play presentation will begin at 2 p.m. PT today, April 13. A tweet about the event from PlayStation says this State of Play will be "more than 20 minutes" long.

How to watch
The Final Fantasy XVI State of Play will be officially live-streamed by Sony on its PlayStation YouTube and Twitch channels today. Of course, you can expect sites like IGN and GameSpot, as well as Final Fantasy-focused influencers, to co-stream the event as well. What to expect
Unlike 2023's previous State of Play, today's showcase is focused on just one game: Final Fantasy XVI. Developed and published by Square Enix, this title has gotten a lot of attention from press previews and a PAX East panel over the past couple of months, and this live stream will likely only expand on the information about the game that we've gotten from those.
Specifically, the PlayStation Blog post about this Final Fantasy XVI presentation says that it'll specifically dive deeper into the "dark fantasy setting, the powerful Eikons and the Dominants who house them, and the flashy battle system." After this State of Play, it seems like everyone should have a very clear idea of what to expect from Final Fantasy XVI if they didn't already.
