Track your activity, and inactivity, to get a better night’s sleep with FitSleep

FitSleep Launch Video

Let’s be honest — getting eight hours of sleep is really, really hard. So if you’re not getting the doctor-recommended amount of shuteye on a daily basis, you’d better hope that the rest you are enjoying is of the best quality possible. And you may be able to do just that with FitSleep, the intelligent sleep companion that claims to result in “superior nights of sleep.”

This sleep tracker promises to keep tabs on your sleeping patterns “by logging heart rate, respiratory rate, and other vital signs, and then using the data to help ensure better nights of sleep.” Simply slide the device under a pillow, mattress, or anywhere else you tend to lay your head down, and let the technology work its magic.

While there exist a multitude of activity trackers on the market, perhaps one of the most important components of our fitness often goes unnoticed. But with FitSleep, you won’t be able to ignore your rest any longer. After collecting data on your sleeping patterns and vital signs, FitSleep constructs a personalized sleeping report, complete with tips on how to achieve a better night’s sleep.

FitSleep employs a range of waves between 1 and 13hz and continuously scans how your body reacts to different waves while you’re at rest. These waves, the company says, impact the nervous system by using biofeedback to adjust vital signs. Once FitSleep has determined which waves the user’s body best interacts with, the device narrows its wave range to a specific frequency, lulling the user to sleep with modulated alpha waves.

“Our goal is to not only help you learn more about your sleep,” said FitSleep creator Xuan Yao, “but give you the tools to achieve an easier and healthier night’s sleep.”

Like most of these devices, FitSleep claims to become increasingly accurate with frequency of use. And as it compiles more and more data on your sleeping habits, it’s able to improve your quality of rest.

“The FitSleep team worked with professionals in both the medical world and numerous scholars to provide the best sleep advice possible,” added Yao. “Simply slide the compact, durable, and portable FitSleep under a pillow, mattress, or even couch cushion and let the magic sleep formula do the work all night, while the user gets the benefits of a great sleep without knowing it’s there.”

FitSleep is currently available for pre-order on Indiegogo, where it has raised well over $50,000 of its $100,000 goal in the first week of its campaign. So if you’d like to try one of these sleep trackers out for yourself, you can grab a FitSleep for the early-bird price of $129.

ClipDart is an on-demand barber app aimed at people of color
ClipDart founder, Kyle Parker.

It’s funny how we can take certain things for granted, like haircuts. Over the course of more than 50 years of living in different cities, different neighborhoods, or even visiting different countries, not once have I ever worried about whether I could find someone who could cut my hair the way I liked. Then again, I’m white.

But if you’re a person of color, it can be an entirely different experience. That’s what Kyle Parker discovered when he left his hometown of Chicago in 2013 to attend Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, population 9,031. While 24% of Grinnell College’s students identify themselves as people of color, fewer than 10% of residents of the city of Grinnell would say the same of themselves.
