Does this phone look like the iPhone 6? Chinese authorities say yes

Apple has been accused of copying the design of another phone to come up with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. That’s something we’ve heard before, but more often than not, it’s another manufacturer being called out for making a smartphone that looks too much like the iPhone. Still, bizarre things happen, and this time it’s Chinese smartphone brand 100+ that’s on the warpath, due to the claimed similarity between its 100C phone and the iPhone 6.

100+ 100C Smartphone

Heard of 100+? Or the 100C phone? No, probably not, but that’s OK. It’s an Android phone from China that doesn’t stand out from the crowd, with a 5.5-inch touchscreen, a MediaTek processor, and a curved-edge body shell that may (or may not) be made out of metal. The company filed a patent dispute with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court, saying Apple’s iPhone 6 models violated its rights, and asked for sales to be stopped.

Perhaps surprisingly, the court agreed with 100+, and told Apple to stop selling the products in question in the Beijing area. Naturally, Apple didn’t see things the same way and fought back, saying neither iPhone 6 models infringed on any patents in the claim. This has resulted in Apple’s iPhone 6 models remaining on sale in Beijing, while the legal teams start to battle it out.

The original report, which was published in the Beijing Morning Post, isn’t clear exactly what patents Apple is accused of infringing, but does say it’s related to design. The 100C smartphone does have a passing resemblance to the iPhone 6, but it also looks quite a lot like the Oppo F1 Plus, and several other iPhone-like devices. We’re sure patent infringement claims are already on their way to all the others, and this definitely isn’t anything to do with suing Apple.

Apple is having a difficult few months in China. In April, the ability to download movies and books was removed from iTunes; a decision that has nothing to do with patents, and instead revolves around market share and local influence.

My iPhone 14 Pro camera is ruined, and it’s all Apple’s fault
The iPhone 14 Pro's camera module.

Every year, Apple touts the iPhone as having an incredible camera system — and, yes, the hardware is certainly impressive. The iPhone 14 Pro has the latest advancements that Apple offers in terms of camera upgrades, including a huge jump to a 48MP main camera with pixel-binning technology (four su-pixels to make up one larger pixel), a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, faster night mode, and more. Again, on the hardware front, the iPhone 14 Pro camera looks impressive. And it is!

But what good is great camera hardware when the software continues to ruin the images you take? Ever since the iPhone 13 lineup, it seems that any images taken from an iPhone, unless it’s shot in ProRaw format, just look bad compared to those taken on older iPhones and the competing best Android phones. That’s because Apple has turned the dial way up on computational photography and post-processing each time you capture a photo. It’s ruining my images, and Apple needs to take a chill pill and take it down a notch.

5 things the iPhone has to change in 2023 before I ditch Android
iPhone 14 Pro with a black always-on screen.

The iPhone’s operating system is many things, but perfect is not one of them. It’s been two years since I shifted to using an iPhone as my primary device, but I still use an Android as my secondary smartphone. And if I weren’t invested in the Apple ecosystem, I would have ditched my iPhone a long time ago.

I have been hoping desperately for iOS to get better at some things Android has been doing for years. For instance, I love scrolling through Twitter while watching a music video on YouTube. I can do this simultaneously on an Android thanks to multiwindow support, but iOS only offers picture-in-picture at best.

Sunbird looks like the iMessage for Android app you’ve been waiting for
Sunbird Android app screenshots.

The idea of iMessage for Android sounds like a pipe dream, and for the most part, it is. Apps like AirMessage and Bleeper do make it possible to get iMessage on your Android phone today, but they often require complicated networking and Wi-Fi port forwarding, plus a Mac or iPhone to run in the background 24/7.

These apps technically work, but they're not things the average user can comfortably and confidently rely on. A new app — called Sunbird — now promises to change that.
