Google brings Android apps to Chrome OS, starting with the Asus Flip Chromebook

Android apps are now part of Chrome OS. At least, if you own an Asus Flip set to the Dev channel.

That hybrid laptop tablet is the first Chromebook with access to the Google Play app store.. Google announced in May that three laptops would get access to Google Play this month: the Asus Flip, the Acer Chromebook R11, and Google’s own Pixel. Friday’s change delivers on a feature Google first announced two years ago, Endgadget is reporting.

This means all kinds of features that previously didn’t work on Chrome OS now do. Reddit users are reporting that Skype video calling is now working on their Flip, thanks to the Android app. Skype famously has not worked on Chromebooks, at least until now.

Not every Android app is supported, however — only those optimized for use on tablets. And some applications are a little buggy, users are reporting, with features like the accelerometer lacking support. Of course, the feature is not yet intended for wide usage, so some bugs are to be expected.

Interested in turning this on? First you need to set up your Chromebook to use the cutting-edge Dev updates. These releases might be a little buggy, but give you access to new features like Android apps. Head to “Settings,” then “About Chrome OS,” then click “More Info.” Click the “Change channel” button, then select “Dev.”

Once you’ve switched to Dev, you should see the option to enable Android apps on your Chromebook’s settings screen. If you don’t see the option, it’s possible your device is not yet supported.

It’s also worth noting that if your Chromebook is managed by an IT department, you might not be able to enable the feature.

It’s not clear when the feature will come to the Dev channel on the Pixel or the R11, or when the feature will be rolled into the stable channel. We’re sure it can’t come soon enough for users who have been excited about the prospect of this feature for years.

At the annual Google I/O developer conference, Google announced several new features coming to Chrome OS later this year. The majority are designed to bring Android phones and Chromebooks closer together with cross-device synergies like communication and app streaming.

As discussed in a 23-minute-long breakout session video, one of the top talked-about features coming to Chrome OS soon is Camera Roll. With this one, you can open and share recent photos from your Android phone on your Chromebook. It will be coming "later this year" and will live in the Chrome OS Phone Hub. From there, you can simply drag and drop the listed photos as needed.

Google Play Store removes info on apps’ most recent update

The Google Play Store has removed the ability for users to see when apps have been last updated. The feature is standard across most mobile app stores as it serves as a useful tool for mobile owners to stay informed about their software, but now Android users are being kept in the dark. Although other information such as file size and version number is still publicly available in the Google Play Store, the removal of the "last updated" feature in the UI has puzzled many users.

This change seems to have been a long time coming as Google tested the waters in November by removing the feature for select users, however, it was met with backlash from fans. Following the tests, the feature was brought back, and it seemed as if the Play Store was going back to normal for good, but as of now, the "last updated" section is gone for all Android users.

U.K. agency says Apple and Google are stifling user choice in their app stores

Apple and Google's mobile platforms have faced a maelstrom of criticism regarding their respective app store and operating system rules, and the U.K.'s Competition and Market Authority (CMA) is adding to that cacophony of voices. After the result of a probe this year, the CMA concluded that the mobile duopoly is leading to "less competition and meaningful choice" for customers.

The CMA highlighted a few incidents of concern. Apple famously not allowing Microsoft's xCloud game streaming app into the App Store merited a mention, as did Google's deals with smartphone makers to include Chrome and other Google apps in exchange for access to the Google Play Store and Google Play Services.
