Dark sci-fi meets the brutal Wild West in the first trailer for HBO’s ‘Westworld’

The first trailer for HBO’s upcoming Westworld series has finally arrived, offering our best look so far at the dark drama based on the 1973 film of the same name about a futuristic, Wild West theme park where the artificially intelligent inhabitants rebel against their human keepers.

The 98-second preview of the series offers an impressively comprehensive taste of what the show has in store for audiences, as well as a look at its all-star cast. Among the familiar faces appearing in the trailer are Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris (The Hours).

Executive produced and co-written by Oscar nominee Jonathan Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight), who also directs two of the episodes, Westworld is set in a future time period at the dawn of artificial consciousness.

The series’ cast also includes Evan Rachel Wood (Mildred Pierce), James Marsden (X-Men), Thandie Newton (Crash), Jeffrey Wright (Angels in America), Tessa Thompson (Creed), Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), Jimmi Simpson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Rodrigo Santoro (300), Shannon Woodward (Raising Hope), Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Chernobyl Diairies), Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), Simon Quarterman (The Devil Inside), Angela Sarafyan (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn), and Clifton Collins, Jr. (Pacific Rim).

Set to debut with a 10-episode first season, the series is co-produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and co-written by Lisa Joy (Burn Notice, Pushing Daisies).

Westworld is expected to debut on HBO at some point in the fall.

HBO Max’s Station Eleven trailer hits home with post-pandemic hope

The COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting everyone's lives at the moment. That may be why the first look at HBO Max's miniseries Station Eleven is so affecting. This adaptation of Emily St. John Mandel's postapocalyptic novel shows us a world where humanity has been devastated by a flu pandemic. At times, it looks all too familiar to events that we've lived through, except to an even greater extent.

HBO Max has debuted the first trailer for Station Eleven, which features a few evocative scenes from the story. There is despair, and there is evil. And yet the trailer also strikes a more hopeful tone as the survivors form connections and attempt to rebuild their lives. As one survivor admits, "this strange and awful time was the happiest of my life."

Moonfall trailer shows Earth on brink of annihilation in sci-fi disaster film

The Moon comes crashing down in Moonfall.

The question has to be asked: What does Roland Emmerich have against the Earth? Between Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012, Emmerich's films turn humanity's destruction into cinematic spectacles that have been big hits at the box office. Emmerich's latest movie, Moonfall, is upping the ante by literally bringing the moon down upon the planet we call home.

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Moonfall, which is full of Emmerich's trademark brand of mayhem. There's almost nowhere to run that's safe when Earth's largest natural satellite comes crashing down. Regardless, there are hints that the moon isn't what it seems to be. A flashback to one of the original lunar missions reveals something alien that could even be alive. And a journey into the moon itself suggests that it's an artificial structure, like a Dyson sphere. In laymen's terms, that's a hypothetical structure that could be built around a star to harness its power. But if the moon isn't a natural phenomenon, then who created it and why?
