She’s super, all right: Scarlett Johansson is the highest-grossing actress of all time

There’s a new leading lady in Hollywood, and her name is Scarlett Johansson.

One of the stars of Marvel Studios’ Avengers franchise and the last two Captain America films, Johansson has a resume of films that have earned more than $3.3 billion in U.S. theaters so far, making her the tenth highest-grossing actor in Hollywood, according to Box Office Mojo. She’s not only the sole woman to appear among the 10 highest-grossing actors at the North American box office, but she’s also the youngest actor in the top 10.

The amount of money grossed by Johansson’s films outearns the totals for well-known male actors Robert DeNiro, Bruce Willis, and Matt Damon, with 2012’s The Avengers proving to be her highest-grossing project to date with $623.4 million domestically.

As with many of the other actors on the list, not all of Johansson’s films feature her in front of the camera. She voiced the snake Kaa in Disney’s recent remake of The Jungle Book, which has earned $358.6 million domestically so far in its run. However, her role as Black Widow in Marvel’s cinematic universe has contributed to much of her box-office success, as five of her six highest-grossing films are set in that universe.

As for who ranks ahead of Johansson on the list, Harrison Ford comes in as Hollywood’s highest-grossing actor with more than $4.8 billion earned by his films. (Last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens accounts for more than $936 million of that total.) Johansson’s fellow Marvel movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. also appear in the top 10, with $4.6 billion and $3.9 billion, respectively.

The next actress to appear on the list is Cameron Diaz, whose films put her in 19th place with $3 billion overall. (Her highest-grossing film was Shrek 2 with $441.2 million.)

There are no new British dramas premiering on PBS in November, but there's more than enough programming to see you through the penultimate month of 2024. Ken Burns is premiering his new documentary, Leonardo da Vinci, about the world's most famous Renaissance man, artist, and inventor. And PBS has several other documentary and nature programs slated to run throughout the month.

PBS' non-partisan coverage of the 2024 presidential election will culminate on Tuesday, November 5. But if you're really missing your British dramas, there are encore presentations of All Creatures Great & Small and Call the Midwife coming as well.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in November 2024
A man stands in front of a caution sign.

James Patterson's Alex Cross character is getting a third chance in live-action this month on Amazon Prime Video. Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry have previously portrayed the titular detective character. Now, Black Adam's Aldis Hodge steps into the role. The new Cross series is Prime Video's biggest debut in November, but far from the only noteworthy addition. There are a lot of new additions to the streamer's movie lineup, including The Godfather trilogy, Silver Linings Playbook, and the unconventional vampire film Abigail.

Additionally, Prime Video is rebooting Cruel Intentions as a drama series, which has the potential to be another big hit for the streamer. And aside from Die Hard, there are only a handful of Christmas titles coming this month. We can appreciate a little restraint, especially since December will likely be a very different story.
