2014 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Edition 507: Who can argue with more horsepower?

Most special edition cars aren’t really that special. Usually, manufacturers throw on some new wheels, an extra option or two, and build a small batch of what they hope will be a future collectible. Mercedes-Benz decided to try something different. The new C63 AMG Edition 507 packs more of what every car enthusiast wants: horsepower.

The name comes from the fact that this C63 has 507 horsepower (and 450 pound-feet of torque). The “normal” C63 has 451 hp and 443 lb-ft, or 481 hp with the AMG Development Package.

Both versions have the same naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8, but Mercedes and in-house tuner AMG made some modifications for the Edition 507. It gets the SLS AMG’s forged pistons, connecting rods, and lightweight crankshaft.

To keep the reinforced engine under control, AMG also installed a “high performance compound construction braking system with red brake calipers.” No performance car is complete without red brake calipers.

Those sports car pistons and red brake calipers give the Edition 507 a performance advantage over the stock C63 AMG. The Edition 507 will do 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, compared to 4.4 seconds for the regular C63 and 4.3 seconds for the 481 hp AMG Development Package model. As with the AMG Development Package, the Edition 507 gets its speed limiter raised from 155 mph to 174 mph.

The Edition 507 will in fact replace the AMG Development Package beginning with 2014 models. Basically, buyers will get everything the Development Package offered, but with 26 more horsepower and a fancier name.

The Edition 507 will become the midlevel C63, splitting the difference between the base car and the insane, 186 mph C63 AMG Black Series.

Unlike the Black Series, the Edition 507 will retain the stock C63’s more subtle bodywork, and will be available either as a sedan or a coupe. Europe may even get a wagon version. The only major visual changes are new 5-spoke alloy wheels and the Black Series’ vented hood.

The C63 AMG Edition 507 will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show, which opens March 5. It will go on sale in the United States this summer, with pricing to be announced closer to the on sale date.
