Audi has confirmed that it will create an all-new luxury crossover called the Q8 based upon MLB platform that underlies the next-generation Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and Volkswagen Touareg, according to Autocar.
As you can see, the Q8 could look more like a coupe than the Q7 and will be sold as a taller A8, with the same levels of refinement but a bit more utility. This marketing scheme will essentially be a misnomer, however, as few coupe-like crossover vehicles provide more interior space or versatility. In fact, they often offer less due to the compromising roofline.
This is a vehicle Audi really needs. While the Q7 is selling well, it sits in a bit of a strange place in the market. With the recent release of the new Mercedes-Benz GL, and the discontinuation of the Q7 V8 model, many customers who used to cross-shop the two have been left scratching their heads.
If you want a full-size luxury crossover, you have to look at the truck-based Infiniti QX56, the new Range Rover variants, the Cadillac Escalade (which is about as refined or as subtle as a Humvee), or the aforementioned Mercedes GL.
We wager that Audi could make a big sales and marketing splash with a Q8, especially if it looks anywhere near to the rendering above.
As soon as we know more about the upcoming Q8, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.
