Ok, well, not really.
There are surely modified and one-off SUVs that will beat the Range Rover Sport SVR to 60 mph, and with a lower curb weight and similar output, Porsche’s 4.2-second Cayenne Turbo is likely to be just as impressive off the line. However, the sporty Range Rover is fast in a different way.
The 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR became the fastest SUV to ever lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife this week, with a blistering time of 8:14. That’s a full second faster than the BMW 1M Coupe that ran in 2011. Not bad for a 5000-pound luxury-mobile.
The Sport SVR is the first SUV to graduate from Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations division, and it is much more athletic and bold because of it. The air intakes, wheels, and brake calipers are larger and more powerful than before, and the quad exhaust system out back teases the Sport’s increased firepower. There’s also a new rear diffuser and mesh grill.
The SVR slated to go on sale in 2015 and will be an upgraded version of the already impressive, 510-hp Range Rover Supercharged. In fact, it will be Land Rover’s most powerful production model ever, with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 producing 543 horsepower.
At a whopping 5,093 pounds, it’s a bit heavier than its main competitor, the 4817-lb, 520-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, but with the increased power, it should be able to compete quite well.
Acceleration times for the Brit have not been officially released yet, but the sporty Range Rover is expected to take care of 60 mph in less than five seconds. The big Porsche will hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
Pricing is also unconfirmed at this time, but the Range Rover Supercharged starts at $101,025, so expect the SVR to fetch a noticeable premium over that. The range-topping Cayenne Turbo runs $113,600.
